Give it a shot! It’s also a good with alcohol markers.

Know that the Strathmore 300/500 series are more absorbent, so act differently even though they’re all Bristol from a single brand.

Sadly, a lot of what makes a paper special isn’t put on the label.

This was my first drawing on the Bristol (400 series).

I think it shows off the qualities. I drew it with ink markers (Pitt pens). I can’t mix the markers on a palette to achieve subtle color variations. But on this paper, the ink absorbs so slowly, I can wipe it away to open up lighter variations.

Yeah. I’ve had success with wet-on-wet wash on arches before. It won’t be dead smooth but it gets close. I like how watercolor does its own thing, but wanted to push against that here.

The Bristol is really good for blending ink—which was how I first planned to go about it. But nah. Gouache it is.

This is Bristol (Strathmore 400) due to that being what my sketch for this piece is on. It’s not good for wet-on-wet techniques. I have some Arches HP and CP. I may go experiment there next, but we’re going to try to do it on my sketch first and hope it works.

Straight gouache (acrylic or watercolor gouache both work. This is actually a mix of both
which is crazy that you can just do that.)

No water. Just drop straight paint dropped on paper. I dropped some white dabs and blue dabs.

Use a foam brush. Get it a bit damp first. Circles! Wax on, wax off.

Once it’s pretty mixed and worked in (like 10-15 seconds in), you make horizontal strokes from the top to the bottom.

Timing is important. If you’re too fast it won’t get mixed and worked in. You’ll get streaks of lighter/darker blue. Too slow, the paint has dried a bit and you get scuffs from the brush.

I’ve been toying around to find how to get a really solid, smooth wash in ink, watercolor, gouache, acrylic gouache.

I’m proud of this attempt. Gouache seems choice. Technique in alt txt.

@annalarssonstudio.bsky.social I bet you might have insightful thoughts (& hope to see more swatches soon!)

I told myself I would draw things beyond pretty women this year. But like
 i started these last year
I’ve a lot of backlog to clear through.

This piece beautifully captures my constant state of in decision around if/how I’m applying contour lines.

Somewhere, somehow, in-between the cracks of caring for family, holding a job, and crippling Pokemon Go addiction, I drew a thing.

Pen & ink wash on paper.

The people of Minnesota have executed one of the most impressive civil resistance campaigns I can remember:

- Organized a city wide general strike
- Maintained nonviolent discipline amidst violence
- Mobilized 10,000s in subzero temps to protest and watch ICE
- Flipped public opinion against ICE

This is one of those stories that is a bigger deal than it seems.

“If you didn’t want to be shot, don’t stand where I point my gun,” is their reasoning.

DHS will quite literally shoot you in the face and then assert they are the victim.

Even if she didn’t, it needed to be confirmed.

JFC, I can’t get my TWO kids out the door and into a car solo in anything less than an hour.

Clearly every parent in this admin is an absentee parent or they’d know this.

I read a source saying the dad had in fact told ICE he wanted to leave with his kids for their safety, got an OK from them, then got attacked.

I mean
I wouldn’t mind a little French Revolution style justice when it’s over.

But I’ll settle for better media laws, upending the Citizen’s United decision, and Pete Hegseth on trial for war crimes. But not an inch less than that.

FWIW, I feel Minnesotans are winning right now. Not in a way that feel like winning
but in ways that truly matter. Winning the world’s heart and alienating ICE and Trump’s administration.

Keep it up y’all. And everyone in the states ought to. Stock their pantries & connect with their community.

It’s telling that they don’t want an investigation nor will they release photos or a doctor’s report.

If there was actual evidence that would help exonerate him in the slightest way, believe me they’d put it up on Twitter in a heartbeat.

Honestly, I don’t even buy that. I think he simply said he had a bruise.

The telling thing is that a medical report or photo would clear up the matter very quickly and they don’t seem to want to release one.

If there was an independent investigation, those investigators could have records on medical care received—doctor’s notes and photos of the injury.

They don’t want that to happen, because they’d rather you just take their word for it.

Nah. You’re looking for logic but he doesn’t do logic.

He fears discomfort. He has a gift for reading & putting people at ease. He won’t push uncomfortable topics. It leads to authentic convos, but the savvy use it to string him along.

He’s looking around, reading the room, & feeling uncomfortable

I don’t think his thought process is deeper than following what feels popular with his audience.

That his message is changing may not reflect his morals but it’s for sure a good sign that popular sentiment has shifted sharply.

Note: I reject the label radical.

Being angry that our rights are being violated is normal as hell. We’ve a long tradition of being anti-authoritarian & anti-fascist.

Rancher, bishop, vet, lawyer, cheerleader, skater? You can be angry, loud, & cool AF.

Radical injustice wakes normal people up.

I might reframe. Seeing radical injustice wakes normal people up.

Our actions are driven by our in-groups. If we identify as “a mom”, we may be angry, but if other moms aren’t engaged we sit back. We keep quiet.

Then a trigger happens that pushes 10% of moms to be vocal. Others see and feel more safe to join. Soon more follow.

Be a leader for your community.

A sketch. In it, French Resistance member Simone Segouin stands by a wall. Despite being anti-fash, she is clearly pro-fashion. She wears a fur cuff ankle boots,
High-waist wide-leg French Bermuda shorts with red sash belt, topped by a Gingham checkered blouse, and accessorized with a looted German MP40 submachine gun. All around her are graffiti Victory Crosses which appear to have been painted over.

Drawn with Faber Castell Pitt Pens, an ink water brush pen, and pencil pocket brush.

Finished this little sketch for myself and all the resisters out there. ✊

Gonna get some sleep now.
