I have a fondness for the old Carnegie buildings. They all look pretty much the same (inside and out), but there's something about browsing for books in one that no other library can match. (The Las Vegas, NM, Carnegie is also one of my faves!)

It’s National Library Week! Visited one of my favorites today, @ppld.org’s Old Colorado City branch housed in an original Carnegie Library building.

A colorful illustration of the front of a library with a librarian at the door waving to members of the community outside. A banner over the library reads "FIND YOUR JOY!" It’s snowing here in Colorado! Seems like the kind of weekend where you should settle in with a good book. Might I suggest Laytons Grove? It’s available now in all ebook formats, or you can order a paperback for the next snowstorm! rmlowery.com/laytonsgrove/
Forty years ago this month, “The Mystery of Al Capone’s Vaults” was watched by 30 million (disappointed) viewers.

These graves have been in this spot since the 1950s, and though they sit on private property, last month, El Paso County funded a refresh (shown in my photos), with new fencing, landscaping, and a new sign. Prior to the refresh, the area was overgrown and surrounded by a wooden fence.
The current graves were relocated to this spot in the 1950s during a widening of 21st Street at Gold Camp Road. Only one person buried here has been identified. Newspaper clipping state that Henry Parks died on the farm in 1900 at 46. The farm opened in 1880 and was in use until the early 1970s.
Colorado Springs once had a literal “poor farm” where, in the days before social safety nets like Medicaid, people without means were sent to work and live. Now located near the Bear Creek Dog Park, northeast of the old farm site, sits a “paupers cemetery” where some of them were laid to rest.

Fun fact: Pabor tried to name a famous Garden of the Gods rock formation "Seal Making Love to a Nun," but Palmer fired him for it.
Today, the formation tends to be called the Seal and the Bear. (Sadly, the "seal" collapsed after heavy rains in 1942.)

I couldn’t find newspaper articles or historical documents to determine when the house was moved to its current location on the northeast corner of El Paso Street and East Española Street, but I did find a 1965 archival photo of it at its current location, so it’s been there at least that long.
The house was built in 1871 by William Pabor, who was the publicist for the city's founder General William Jackson Palmer.
Palmer's wife, Mary "Queen" Palmer opened the city's first school in the house, in November 1871. She quit after five weeks...
(Newspaper clipping from the Gazette.)
This is the oldest continually lived in house in Colorado Springs. These days, it’s located in the Patty Jewett neighborhood, but it didn't start there. It was originally located on the northeast corner of Bijou Street and Cascade Avenue, in downtown.
