One comment on the Wikipedia article though, the term "Óð" in old Icelandic is assumed to mean spirit, soul, or even poetry. The Norse god Óður draws his name from the same root but has no immediate connection to Hænir that I'm aware of.

That's exactly right! There's a bit of a tradition emerging of naming "East" Arctic Ocean features after local mythological figures, e.g. Loki's Castle and Svyatogor Ridge.

A diagram of the life cycle of the seal heart worm. The first few stages of the worm develop in the louse, and then the nematodes move to seals and develop into larger adults. Seal lice are delightfully round, but less delightfully apparently transmit heart worms.
Thing I learned today: Seal Lice vector seal heart worms! I don't know of another louse species that vectors a nematode. Do any other entofriends? www.nature.com/articles/s41...
What is biodiversity? What is genomics? How do they work together to support species monitoring & conservation? 🌍🧬

Þetta er búinn að vera svakalegur veikinda vetur hjá mörgum. Var að skoða gögnin frá landlækni í gærkvöld og þetta er sýnileg stigmögnun á inflúensu sýkingum síðasta rúman mánuð.

Ingibjörg G. Jónsdóttir at @mfri.bsky.social along with her co-authors Jón Sólmundsson, Peter J. Wright, William Butler and Pamela Woods published a paper in the ICES Journal of Marine Science.
The study explores the roles of total egg production and the survival of young fish in their first year.
MFRI is taking part in a large-scale international project on harmful algae > Marine phycotoxins in the Arctic: an emerging climate change risk (PHATE) which is a collaborative project on sustainable development and food security in the Arctic. See more here: www.hafogvatn.is/en/about/new...

The final salmon fry samples of the year were just collected in western Iceland. One year old fry are being sampled for signatures of genetic introgression of aquaculture salmon following an escape event in Patreksfjörður in 2023. Video is from Kjallakstaðaá by Fellsströnd.

Síðustu erfðasýnatökur ársins úr laxseiðum eru nú í gangi á Vesturlandi. Verið er að safna eins árs seiðum til að skoða umfang erfðablöndunar í kjölfar stroksins í Kvígindisdal í Patreksfirði 2023. Myndskeið frá Kjallakstaðaá og Tunguá (Galtardalsá) við Fellsströnd.

The collective plight of token Icelanders in groups asked to field "is this true" questions about Iceland:
Strikamerkjagreining á hvatbera DNA, einangrað um borð á meðan leiðangri stóð, sýnir pólhverfa útbreiðslu tegundarinnar. Minna en 1% munur sást á milli allra sýnistöku staða, frá Noregshafi alla leið yfir til Kanada.
Mitochondrial barcoding of DNA extracted onboard during the expedition revealed circumpolar connectivity of the species, with intraspecific sequence similarity >99% across all sample sites, from Norwegian water across to Canada.
The first article from last year's expedition on the famous Polarstern that I participated in has been published.
The amphipod species Amathillopsis spinigera was found for the first time during this expedition in the 25 year sampling history of the Fram Strait.

Fyrsta grein frá leiðangrinum í fyrra á Þýska ísbrjótnum Polarstern sem ég tók þátt í er komin út.
Marflóategundin Amathillopsis spinigera fannst í fyrsta sinn í þessum leiðangri á 25 ára sýnistökuferli um Fram sundið.

Mosquitoes have been found in Iceland. The mosquito species Culiseta annulata has been confirmed in Iceland. It might survive the cold weather in Iceland, at least in Reykjavík.
