People like to talk about the chemistry in the studio during the recording sessions for albums like 'Pet Sounds' and 'Dark Side of the Moon' but can you imagine the sheer, crackling energy present during the recording of the Mentos theme song?

"But what can the two of us do alone?"
"Alone, true, but with such hatred..."
Her eyes held a strange gleam. I felt afraid and overjoyed.

Walked through literal fog today thinking about what excites me about writing. It’s possibility, what can or could be. The veil partially lifted, asking the reader to reveal the rest. The power of suggestion and imagination. A refusal of taxonomy, of certainty, of the wikization of invented worlds.

Sometime within the last 24 hours someone in the white house uttered the phrase 'The enemy of my enemy is my friend' and that wove it's way through Trump's brain and turned into 'If the US blocks the Strait of Hormuz, we win'

All this to say: if you liked 'Piranesi' you might like 'The Veldt Institute' but, also, you might not.

It's also just really cool to see a book like 'Piranesi' that is pretty weird and conceptual - as well as vibe-heavy/plot-light - get so much popular traction.

Many of us want to write something completely 'original' and 'new'.

This is never really possible but when we do think we are on an original track, there is the threat that coming across another work that is similar enough (at least to us), will dampen that excitement.

While 'Piranesi' is definitely different from TVI in many ways (maybe it's just self-obsession to see one's writing in other's work) there are some similarities that are striking, even eerie.

I'm certainly enjoying 'Piranesi' a lot, though I'm also glad I didn't read it before 'TVI' came out.

It's always cool - after you write something - to read some *thing* that feels like a spiritual predecessor to some *thing* that you wrote.

Am reading Susanna Clarke's 'Piranesi' for the first time right now.

It had been on my radar since it came out, but I just hadn't gotten around to it.

sometimes, someone says thank you for writing, this meant something to me, i appreciate this. and you say ah, very good, and keep writing. sometimes, someone says hey you're a dingdong, i hate you and resent that this exists, i am so mad, goddamn you. and you say ah, very good, and keep writing.

'Death to America'
- 'Genuine, immanent, existential' threat (for decades)
- Justifies sanctions, bombing, invasion
- This cannot stand

'A Whole Civilization will Die Tonight'
- Bombastic rhetoric
- He doesn't actually mean it
- Just a negotiation tactic
- Watch the Dow
