Belém, the capital of the state of Pará in northern Brazil, lies near the mouth of the Amazon River and has grown into a key economic and logistical centre for the wider Amazon region. Located within the tropical rainforest zone, the city is the site of both urban expansion and important ecosystems.

This false-colour image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 12 August 2025, highlights the sharp contrast between natural vegetation, shown in green, and urban areas, visible in pink.

Belém is hosting the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), marking the first time the summit has been held in the Amazon region. The choice of location is both symbolic and strategic, underscoring the Amazon rainforest’s crucial role in regulating the global climate and preserving biodiversity.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) has published its latest monthly Climate Bulletin, which focuses on key climate trends in October 2025. The bulletin reports that October 2025 was the third-warmest October globally, with an average surface air temperature of 15.14°C, 0.70°C above the 1991-2020 average for the month.

This data visualisation, produced using C3S data, illustrates the surface air temperature anomalies across part of the Northern Hemisphere in October 2025. Warmer-than-average temperatures have been observed over much of northern and western Europe, where the average temperature was 10.19°C, 0.60°C above the average for the month. The Arctic Ocean northeast of Svalbard and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago have also been particularly affected, with surface air temperature anomalies reaching up to 8 °C above average.

Hurricane Melissa formed over the central Caribbean Sea on 22 October 2025 before moving north-west and making landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane, the most powerful ever recorded on the island. As it continued across the Jamaica Channel, it struck the eastern coast of Cuba with sustained intensity (Category 3) before weakening over the northern Caribbean. The damage caused by Hurricane Melissa was catastrophic, affecting both lives and infrastructure.

The Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) was activated (EMSR847) to provide assessments of flood extent and impacts in affected regions. The activation covered 29 Areas of Interest and, as of 4 November, over 31 products have been published, with additional maps expected in the coming hours.

This data visualisation shows the latest grading products released for the Big Woods, Bull Savanna, Arlington, Santa Cruz and Top Hill areas of interest in Jamaica. Additional information is available here.

The EU Science for Preparedness Conference is taking place from 4 to 6 November 2025, organised by the Joint Research Centre, which implements the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS), and the Disaster Risk Management Knowledge Centre. The conference will provide opportunities for exchanging knowledge, testing new tools, and connecting with others committed to advancing science-based crisis preparedness and response. The live streaming of the conference is available here.

Environmental law is changing to defend the climate and planet at local and global levels Approaches vary in terms of who is filing the lawsuit, against whom and whether it is based on protecting human rights or the rights of the environment itself.

Yes, this is important in systematic change. And it’s late, late, but better late than never. Honoring work of the late great #PollyHiggins and my colleagues #cormaccullinan #michaelaclayton #janglazewski #terrywinstanley #michellemaloney #carterdillard

Yet another long article in Norwegian media about the rapidly vanishing ski season, including lots of detail about rising temperatures, but not a single mention of the cause.

About 80% of the 200 million tonnes of reactive nitrogen is lost to the environment annually, benefiting nitrogen-tolerant species at the expense of more sensitive ones.
