Shoplifting is hugely enabled by scan-as-you-shop systems.
Even random checks do not necessarily pick up unpaid items as they only check a sample.
It is also easy to mis-scan, thinking it has scanned when it hasn't, difficult to establish one intended not to pay.
Perhaps there were harms to children at that time that could have been avoided with phones. Fact that people grew up without it doesn't mean it wouldn't have been a benefit.
