Initiation of combat. The player is in the room with the Wimpy Monster (if you know how rom 2.4b6 mud school is laid out), the sprite for it is a top down view of a bug, or a crab. The log shows the player casting magic missle at it, from several tiles away, and damaging it.

The mob has approached the player, attacked them, and been killed, the drops are on the floor, the logs show the aftermath of the combat.

Login screen showing a login for a Graphical mud. It has Bluesky as a login option.

Very very basic ui.

I found myself wondering how hard it would be, with modern tools, to translate Rom2.4b6 to a 2d graphical game.

So, i grabbed school.are, and Claude, and started designing and testing.

Now, at this point , i've got a minimal Rom2.5D (heh), that's playable.

Curious if there's interest.

A miniboss room, with conveyor belts around the edge, pits symetrically around the floor.

The belts have rocks on them, and crab like creatures called "Sortacians"

a class SNES style dialog window is open, saying "They don't seem to be aiming *at* me."

Here's a screen shot of the actual UI.

It's got three lanes. 4 songs, Fur Elise, Happy Birthday, Daisy Daisy, and a secret final song. See if you can recognize it. (And then don't sue me please!! hehe)

A qr code containing the entire source code for a very simple version of guitar hero.

I intended to put all the code here, but it's about 900 characters too long.

Did you know bsky is a game distribution platform?

If only most QR code scanners accepted data: urls, you'd be able to play the worlds most minimal version of #guitarhero

Slimes in games are always just piles of goo.

What happens if you have a pile of sentient rgb goo?

Mimics. Mimic's are what you get when you have a pile of sentient, angry, rgb goo.

Huh. Those turkey legs, and bombs keep getting knocked off the belt and into that pit.

But if i poke this switch... the turkey legs go through.

Bet... there's another switch for the bombs.

(Well, there will be when i build it... hehehe)

Roguelike Academy: Freshman Year by FOTD Games A traditional roguelike, about a nontraditional school.

fotdgames.itch.io/roguelike-ac...

Well, it's out there on Itch now.

The Wizard, and the Warrior are fully implemented, and 3/5 floors have some content, along with a bit of an ending when you reach the third floor boss.

I think i've cleaned up most of the bugs i know about, and i'm in a passable spot for a game at 0.3.x. Heh.

I've just pushed it out and it's a first public release with no real advertising yet, so only two people have commented, but it's gotten a laugh from both of them.

It does help that my games a bit fourth wally, and has comedic intent.

I Literally had a character show up and say "Hey, you reached the end of the demo. There's no more. Go back to the start and do it again on a new seed" (though, in fancier language)

heh.

Some gameplay footage from the process of going from 0.2.0 to 0.3.0. I've posted this before, but might as well tack it on here. Heh.

So, i've just pushed out a playable build of my game. "Roguelike Academy. Freshman Year"

fotd-games.com

This is version 0.3.0, so, while it's playable, and beatable, and most of the features are there... bugs likely abound.

All of the art, and music are placeholders.

It's a level from the game i'm working on Roguelike Academy:Freshman Year, without any entities, scrolling along behind the main menu, and the changelog.

It's at just enough of a rotation to make it clear that it's not part of the ui or a playable thing.

It feels kinda like a cheat that just generating a level, rotating it 3 degrees, and lerping it past makes a decent title screen.

Just feels weird to try to carry around the dev environment, dunno.

Out of curiosity, how many people have "Upstairs" projects, and "Downstairs" projects? or something similar?

I have one game i'm working on in my office, and the little PoC i just pushed out was (until yesterday) my upstairs project, for when i'm jiggling the baby, or minding the youngin.

An actual run of the little Randomizer Concept, did better than i did on my initial post. Heh.

Randomizer Concept

go fight the boss from the moment you get the key, because it's a randomizer. Hehe.

randomizerpoc-f3hih.ondigitalocean.app

You can play it here. (Ignore the "c to connect to server", concept for a seed server eventually)

The win screen from the worlds smallest randomzier. 35 seconds, not my personal best.

Screenshot of the victory screen from a proof-of-concept ‘world’s smallest’ Link to the Past–style randomizer. A top-down pixel-art map shows grass, trees, stone ruins, and a river with a small bridge on the right. Centered on the screen is a dark dialog box reading: ‘VICTORY! Congratulations! Time: 0:35. Equipment Order: Key → Ring of Jumping → Sword. Press ESC to return to menu

I've built the worlds smallest randomizer. It's got a Sphere 0, a Sphere 1, and a Sphere 2. Proper logic is followed when laying out the items.

Sphere 1 requires either the key or the ring of jumping, sphere 2 requires *both*.

In theory, there's a sphere 3, ([key|ring] sword), but you can

This is the first image of a succesfull spawn of the third floor, with the miniboss room, the stairs and everything connected.

I'd still call it a fail, because the way the corridor is drawn into the boss area breaks some specific corridor rules, but damn does it feel nice to have it in.

I've been working on wizard spells. Here, we get to see one of the wizards starting spells (Curse of Life Drain, a DoT), and one of the more powerful spells, Ice storm.

All of the wizard spells in the spellbook work. They've all got VFX, and at least some upgradability.

All of the base warrior skills are in place.

Seems like its time for content, balance, and polish.
