Sometimes when you’re on a work call with me, this is what’s happening on the other side.

But, like any curren events reference… that’s not really true anymore hah
I think it’s not much deeper than:
US has two political parties, so ‘normal’ cross compilation deals with 2 things.
But when three things are involved it’s Canadian because Canada has three main political parties…
So, let’s say I want a compiler that I can distribute to someone with an Apple Silicon Mac, and they want to use that machine to compile for RISCV, but I’m on an Intel Linux machine?
Build: x86_64 Linux
Host: AArch64 Darwin
Target: RISCV Linux
Some of you may think this account is about programming, but in reality it’s about obsessing over real small details (sometimes to the detriment of my life at large). Don’t get it twisted, programming is but one view into this.
Coffee, jazz, and aviation are the others.
CANADIAN=no
If build, host, and target are all the same, this is called a @dfn{native}. If build and host are the same but target is different, this is called a @dfn{cross}. If build, host, and target are all different this is called a @dfn{canadian} (for obscure reasons dealing with Canada's political party and the background of the person working on the build at that time).
The gcc source has some good finds:
Marco Rubio complaining about how lots of transactions will be denominated in something other than US dollars
A frame from I think you should leave where the character who is clearly to blame is saying “we’re all looking for the guy who did this”
I’m in the group chat, where we share every coffee we make with each other. Pretty much my main reason for getting out of bed these days. I was asked to demonstrate a slowsetta, so here’s what that looks like.
Congrats!
This is how you all use Claude, right?
<years pass>
I don’t get why I find it so hard to connect with people. I find the jokes Claude gives me to be really funny… why doesn’t anyone else?
AI can read scientific papers for me? Oh man, imagine all the time I’ll save!
Can it watch movies for me too?!
I’m so excited for it to write a story I can read to my nephew!
Maybe next it’ll write the eulogy I need for my friend’s funeral!
Trying to take it as motivation to be so good I can’t be ignored(?) I read that in some motivational Instagram post or something. Let’s hope it works.
Apologies for the self-pity. The state of the world has me feeling lots of despair and it’s leaking out.
I am consistently ghosted for adjunct positions in Canada 😞
Teaching is pretty much the only thing I felt genuinely good at, so my ego is at all time lows.
The area I do research in is preoccupied with correctness and having systems we can fully understand. This mentality makes things like LLMs ‘ugly’ to us, even putting aside all the awful aspects of theft of intellectual property.
It might be that there are ‘good’ things, but it’s fighting uphill
For what it’s worth, I was a CS prof (not in AI/Machine Learning) and I find it all very depressing. A lot of non-AI/ML computer scientists resent this stuff, it’s hard to give it a fair shake when the overwhelming feeling is anger.

wrote a few paragraphs today about why early Stack Overflow was such a special and rewarding community to contribute to and why so many of us who were there have never really stopped mourning its slow but steady decay meta.stackoverflow.com/a/438314/465...
Your writing is always so great!
Happy Sunday.
A latte with a swan as the latte art
Happy Wednesday
Three lattes, left to right, with progressively better art. The first one spilled.
Same three lattes, but from the other side. You can see the the first one spilled a lot. The second a tiny bit and the third not at all.
You can see me slowly wake up on this very Monday of mondays.

This is also part of it
Jake Paul • @jakepaul Purposefully turning off the halftime show Let's rally together and show big corporations they can't just do whatever they want without consequences (which equals viewership for them) You are their benefit. Realize you have power. Turn off this halftime. A fake American citizen performing who publicly hates America. I cannot support that. 4:47 PM • Feb 8, 2026 • 4.8M Views • Twitter for iPhone
This sort of thing is part of it
It will be hard to explain, but I did shed a tear and get choked up at the conclusion of the halftime show.
