Really great points. PAHO’s Strategic Fund is an excellent example of pooled procurement done right, and it’s been essential in supporting local manufacturing within LAC.

EPA Scientists Said They Were Pressured to Downplay Harms From Chemicals. A Watchdog Found They Were Retaliated Against. Three reports issued by the agency’s inspector general detailed personal attacks suffered by the scientists — including being called ā€œstupid,ā€ ā€œpiranhasā€ and ā€œpot-stirrersā€ — and called on the EPA to…

Under Trump, EPA scientists say managers encouraged them to delete evidence of chemicals’ harms, including cancer, miscarriage and neurological problems, from their reports. And in some cases, they said, their managers deleted the information themselves.

The US critically needs to develop policies to combat next-gen threats like these. We need more research and more advocacy going towards the rise of sĆŗpertangles.

That&/ the problem with the gradual backslide. I think the best thing is to give them ā€œgoalpostsā€ almost. You say, ā€œwhen XYZ happens, that’s a sign of things going badā€. They’ll say it’ll never happen, but when it inevitably does, it almost serves as a reality check.

Since some seem determined not to get it:

Arguing science shouldn’t be political is like arguing that ducks shouldn’t be waterfowl.

Sure, whatever floats your boat, but they wouldn’t be ducks then would they?

Science is a collective human effort at sensemaking—the very definition of political.

Health security needs to rapidly develop contingency plans for dealing with the effects of increased climate disasters. Hurricane Michael wiped much of the healthcare infrastructure of my town in FL - but what happens if a Cat 5 hurricane makes landfall in Miami?

Battling Infectious Diseases in the 20th Century: The Impact of Vaccines The number of infected people, measured over 70-some years and across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, generally declined after vaccines were introduced.

Why do we have to prove vaccines work with data? It’s not like it was ever up for debate before 2020.

The evidence was overwhelming. graphics.wsj.com/infectious-d...

H5N1 bird flu virus in Canadian teenager displays mutations demonstrating virus’ risk The H5N1 virus that infected a Canadian teen appears not to have spread, but it shows signs of mutation that makes flu virologists nervous.

Genetic sequencing of the #H5N1 #birdflu virus from the Canadian teenager shows worrying changes. It doesn't mean H5 is taking off — but it's a reminder that it might, says @scottehensley.bsky.social. "This is exactly the scenario that we fear.ā€ www.statnews.com/2024/11/18/b...
