Just so it’s clear, the government wanted to oversee hiring and employment at a *private* institution in order to implement a purity test. When the institution refused, they took away money for life saving research (cancer etc).

That’s some fascist shit.

I received a heartbreaking email today: A paper in a special issue I’m editing is being retracted because one of its authors is afraid of losing their job and their legal status in the U.S. if they publish a scientific study on evolution. Yes, on evolution, nature's engine of diversity.

Brown University advises all international community members to postpone, reconsider travel One week before spring break, Brown advised international community members, including green card holders and permanent residents, to postpone international travel in a campus-wide email sent on Sunda...

Chilling report from Brown University.

Administration advises all foreign students, staff, and faculty to postpone or reconsider (ie cancel) international travel, due to federal government's crackdown on universities.

Brown also warns against *domestic travel* -since it's unclear what ICE will do.

Why we should keep phones out of schools: Solving a collective trap Issue 115: Why people hate social media, but can't stop using it.

Social media is a collective trap: Users feel compelled to stay engaged, even if they hate it.

The majority would prefer to live in a world without Tik Tok or Instagram (which currently have 3.5 billion users).

I wrote about this problem and a solution: www.powerofusnewsletter.com/p/why-we-sho...

So 2023 was a miraculous year for the economy: high growth with inflation falling all the way back to the Fed's target, rising real wages. And here, according to YouGov, is how Republicans saw it

Nearly Everyone Gets A’s at Yale. Does That Cheapen the Grade? A report found that close to 80 percent of grades were in the A range last academic year. A pandemic-era bump has stuck.

There is massive grade inflation at top universities—and it’s getting worse.

Grade inflation is occurring at most colleges, spiked during the pandemic, and is lower in the sciences.

When the average GPA is 3.7 the grades essentially become meaningless. www.nytimes.com/2023/12/05/n...

This is 100% real. A prof. has every incentive just to hand out A's because doing otherwise makes your life miserable for no reason. The only reason I don't is b/c 1. I'm teaching a required course and want to select for better students and 2. it kills the spark in the 10-15% with actual promise.

... as if the world doesn't have enough problems already... 😑🤮

I studied in Delaware and like Joe, but that the democrats couldn't establish a younger, charismatic candidate to sweep away that criminal autocrat Trump might cost the United States it's democracy. 😕

A lot of criticism has recently been levelled at behavioural scientists, ranging from p-hacking to outright fraud. My impression is that the problem is not in behavioural economics per se, but some other areas clearly seem to have a problem.
