After spending two weeks in Tokyo and Seoul it really is night and day with major American cities and it’s most noticeable with public transportation and sanitation. Very impressive cities, great walkability, and it’s super convenient and accessible to eat out and shop. I couldn’t recommend more!

"New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and as of tonight, led by an immigrant. so hear me, President Trump, when I say this: to get to any of us, you will have to get through ALL OF US." - Zohran Mamdani

Beautifully said. Solidarity forever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

If anything, the Zone of Interest may have overstated the psychological self-trickery and abnormality necessary to carry out a genocide

What’s coming is an industrial-scale ethnic cleansing. Not through mass murder, but through increasingly inhumane detentions and mass forced relocations across the globe. Because it can’t be hidden, the regime has leaned into the media environment and commercialized fascism with memes and merch.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

This is one of America's saddest days, but it pales in comparison to the days that are coming for so many here.

I was at the Miami Immigration Court the other day and without exaggeration, probably every other person there was an undercover ICE agent. Terrifying for my clients and honestly I was on edge as well. They were in the halls, huddled around the bathrooms, and even sat in the courtroom. Intimidating.

Exactly. What’s happening is what was constantly said was going to happen. They truly voted for this and I don’t know where any feeling of surprise comes from.

Highly recommended thread. Just wanna say something about originalism right quick.

There is no plausible originalist argument for anything that the SG said today. None whatsoever.

I still have faith the institutional guardrails will hold

There will inevitably be an executive vs judicial branch showdown that will determine whether our checks and balances are actual guardrails or just words on written on paper.

What just happened in the last 48 hours is chilling. Forcing people to an offshore blacksite without due process is no different from a dictatorship disappearing people. I fear some scary times are coming.

I was thinking the same thing

That means that people can be persecuted by this “hybrid criminal state” I guess

“The foundation of democracy is not voting, essential as it is. It is an informed citizenry. That is why one of the paramount jobs of autocrats is to attack education, free thought, ideas, speech, knowledge and facts themselves.”

We shouldn’t appeal to people’s xenophobia or reinforce the false stereotype that immigrants kill American jobs even. Highlighting “immigrant” and “killing” is quite the choice.

Update: Now the main court phone numbers have also been removed from the websites. If it wasn’t for google saving the numbers when you search for the court, I’m not sure how you’d be able to contact them. What is going on?

1/ Before the 2024 Presidential election, I frequently posted here that I believed the survival of our Republic was at risk and that a vote for anyone except Harris/Walz was a vote for fascism.

Events since the 2024 Presidential election have only heightened my fear that our Constitution is . . .

Folks. We do not concede the lawfulness of something even when the president obviously does not care. The norms must be defended as institutions unto themselves.

Things like this will never make the news but it’s an example of under the radar ways that immigrants are being intentionally inconvenienced and ultimately harmed. I can maybe understand removing the clerk’s names for privacy/safety concerns but the numbers? What’s up with that?

As an immigration attorney you notice the small ways that the administration makes practicing more inconvenient like removing the names and now phone numbers of IJ clerks from the EOIR website. Effectively funneling everyone to the court’s main number which obviously can’t handle that many calls.

The government has laid out its legal arguments in defense of the Birthright Citizenship executive order. They unsurprisingly draw on Elk v. Wilkins (Indian law) in their 3 page merits argument.

It is time to better understand this field and these cases. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

The future of the Republic is uncertain.

I do not know whether the Department of Justice will become the tip of the spear of fascism under FBI Director (?) Kash Patel.

I do not know if ICE & CBP will be running huge internment camps.

I do know that I'll do my best to fight it.

I completely agree. They want you to preemptively lose faith in our institutions. You must choose to believe that they will hold.

Ending birthright citizenship needs to be sued into the ground immediately.

It's not just undocumented immigrants. The Trump birthright citizenship EO says that every child born to a parent here on any non-immigrant visa (including student visas and other visas which allow people to live in the US for years) is not a US citizen. Unconstitutional in the extreme.
