A kindred spirit (down to the handwriting) with whoever annotated a beloved used copy of the Iliad in English. Why do I love it? For the note "Achilles is a hero", first put to paper in book 18/24, on the n-hundredth mention of his name, of a work whose first line tells you "Achilles is a hero"

Things I learned at @terrorcamp.bsky.social this year:

-the word “scurbotic”
-the American Ornithological Society is my enemy
-I would take a bullet for a Norwegian museum curator named Anders whom I’ve never met
-you absolutely do not want to know how they figure out the age of a Greenland shark

That ship you see, my guests,
says that she was the fastest of all ships— she was capable of surpassing any other boat
whether the job was to fly with an oar-blade or with a canvas sail.
And (she says) the shore of the menacing Adriatic
doesn't deny this, and neither do the Cycladic islands or noble Rhodes
or the rough Thracian sea of Marmara or the wild Pontic gulf
(where that future boat was previously leafy forest;
on the Cytorian summit, with rustling foliage,
she often made a whistling sound).
Pontic Amastris and boxwood-bearing Cytorus,
the boat says that these things were and are well-known to you:
from her earliest beginning, she says that she stood on your peak,
she dipped her little oars in your water;
and from there, through so many wild seas,
she carried her master (whether a left or right wind would call,
or whether favorable weather fell upon both sails at the same time)
and no offerings on her behalf were made to the shore gods
when she was coming from the final sea all the way to this clear lake.
But these things happened before: now, in secluded repose,
she grows old and dedicates herself to you,
twins Castor and Pollux, patron gods of sailors.

Summary:

        “It doesn’t matter anyway,” says Tommy quickly — anything to make Jopson stop looking at him like that. “Because even if he would let me, I wouldn’t know what to do.”

        “You haven’t—?”

        Tommy shrugs and takes a bite of his forgotten supper so he doesn’t have to think about his burning cheeks. “Few quick fumbles. Never time for much else.”

        Jopson is still looking at him, but thankfully, the pitying expression is finally gone, replaced by something rather thoughtful.

        “Would you like me to show you how?”

    As the ocean around them slowly freezes over, Tom Jopson and Tommy Armitage find a way to keep themselves warm. If Tommy sometimes suspects that Jopson is using their arrangement to help him forget about someone else, it's not as if he has any room to complain - not when he's doing the same thing.

Screenshot from season one episode eight of The Terror, "Terror Camp Clear." Lieutenant Edward Little stands bewildered, angry, and afraid, surrounded by men who should be under his command but aren't. Sergeant Tozer's words from off-screen are in captions along the bottom of the image: "Perhaps you'd like to make the order, sir?"

call him "sir" in a way that lets him know without a shadow of a doubt that you are hyper-aware that his authority is an illusion and also you have a gun

“THAT BECAME OUR code. Sometimes I would say it: "I can't sleep." Sometimes he would ask, "Are you having trouble sleeping?"
The answer was always yes. Then he would slip down into my bunk. Once he told me that he had heard that of all the professions, bakers know the most tricks to fall asleep. Because bakers have to get up at four o'clock in the morning to start their bread, they have to go to sleep just as it gets dark. The baker's trick, Robbie said, was to smoke half a cigarette, jerk off, smoke the other half of the cigarette, then get immediately between the sheets. The bakers would pass right the fuck out. We made up our own baker's trick. We snuck out the win-dow, out to the soccer fields where he stashed his cigarettes. We shared a cigarette as he blew me in a dark stand of maples. I handed it down to him as he sucked, he took breaks to puff, so that the cherry faintly illuminated his face, then he passed it back to me and went back at it. Afterward, we each smoked a whole cigarette and then climbed back inside. I slept like a baker.”
