If you’re writing your favorite trope but it’s just not hitting like you hoped, dig into why that trope usually works.

Example: the chosen one trope hits because it means magic can come from anywhere, not “this one kid is the only worthwhile kid”.

Writing it the second way will fall flat.

Everyone I know who had help rebuilding their lives from major disasters or addiction or health issues or whatever else other reasons have all been far more driven to help their communities and uplift people who have had to walk their paths. Organizations and charities and mutual aid, they all cover different aspects of rebuilding. We all deserve stability and safety in this life. The fires don’t prioritize those who are “more deserving,” so let’s us at least try to help those we can.
