It’s time for my annual Performance Review at work and all I want to do is email a short statement saying “you should be grateful I continue to waste a third of my god given existence working for this pittance, leave me alone, you box ticking fools.”
Look, for my money the absolute game changer technologies right now are batteries and biosciences, not statistically modeling a mid conversation, but you do you.
I’m flying EasyJet from Bristol Airport this week, I’ll let you know.
Someone has documented the entire source code for Elite and explained how every line works, plus included deep dives into various functionality. Covers all main versions like BBC Micro, Commodore 64 and NES. You can also play online in browser. elite.bbcelite.com

Happy 65th birthday to Robert Carlyle, who has always understood the assignment.

Postcard back with 2.5d stamp featuring a young Queen Elizabeth. Dear Nick, I hope you have a fine day tomorrow for the Queen's visit and a chance to see her fairly close. Isn't this a good kind of bridge? Love, Mummy
This is sweet. Can't make out the year in the postmark, but from the stamp/message you can pin it down to 29 October 1957, one day before the Queen visited Brentwood School to open their new science building. Wonder if Nick is in this pic! www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-.... #postcard #bristol

It’s almost like he might’ve had some trouble in the past.
Eggs poaching (not quickly enough) in a pan
Come on, lunch.
I’m not taking the risk. Of course, if I get up before dawn chances are they’ll finally turn at at 5pm…
Christ. Tomorrow's Hoover washing machine service appointment has a window of 06:30 to 08:30. Who the feck is awake enough to welcome a washing machine repair man at the literal crack of dawn?
Hudson Hawk is fine as it is, thank you very much.
[alt text by NASA] The Moon, seen here backlit by the Sun during a solar eclipse on April 6, 2026, is photographed by one of the cameras on the Orion spacecraft’s solar array wings. Orion is visible in the foreground on the left. Earth is reflecting sunlight at the left edge of the Moon, which is slightly brighter than the rest of the disk. The bright spot visible just below the Moon’s bottom right edge is Saturn. Beyond that, the bright spot at the right edge of the image is Mars. Credit: NASA
Whoa 🤯
The Moon, in full eclipse, with the #Artemis II Orion spacecraft. Part of the Moon and spacecraft are lit by Earthshine, and both Saturn and Mars are visible to the lower right. Incredible. Details: images.nasa.gov/details/art0...
That’s lovely! At our school there were a few notable alumni, but given that I’m not into football I wasn’t too impressed when I took out a book formerly loaded to a certain Trevor Brooking!
Thanks!
Can you imagine explaining that one to airport security?
I know digital is the only system that makes any sense these days but opening up an old library book and seeing these delightful analogue artefacts still roughing out some of its history always delights me.
I booked EasyJet before all this nonsense properly kicked off, but at least I chose all the flexibility/cancellation insurance options…
Adrian on my shelf amongst Robert Louis Stevenson, Bram Stoker, the Strugatskys, Ted Sturgeon, James Tiptree Junior (who might still be on this section of shelf under her real name, of course) and EC Tubb. This isn’t even the SF&F section!
@aptshadow.bsky.social’s alphabetical ordering puts him in pretty good company, it turns out.
You know, I’ve never actually watched Doctor Strangelove.
This would be cute if it didn't feel like Act 1, Scene 3 of a folk horror film.
*You* might be old enough to remember him; *I* couldn't possibly comment.
"Osier coffee?" "It's lovely, thanks." #jokesthatonlycruciverbalistswillget
I just washed the car. Have you got a fiddle I could borrow?
