This. Is. Murder. Even. If. No. One. Calls. It. That.
This has never, ever, ever worked in workers’ favor in the history of labor automation and it’s incredibly foolish and self-destructive to think you’ll be the exception.
I don’t understand why it all has to be so bad all at once??
As I discuss in my first book, in 1914 NY’s Yiddish anarchist and militantly anti-Zionist newspaper Fraye Arbeter Shtime had more subscribers than the entire membership of all US Zionist organizations combined
It 100% deserves to displace Woodcock and Marshall’s books as one of the go-to general overviews of the history of anarchism.
Maybe, just maybe, people should start to understand that there is no such thing as non punitive detention. And so the entire premise of immigration law— that this is civil and isn’t meant to punish or coerce— is a tremendous lie
Maybe the historical precedent of excepting “merchants” from the Chinese Exclusion Act?

We are trialling the new, update version of the List of Digitized Anarchist Periodicals (LIDIAP). In the future, it will be easier to suggest new periodicals to add to the database. LIDIAP is an invaluable database for anyone working on the history of anarchism.

Incidentally, IWW members also conducted the first known hunger strike in an immigration detention center (Ellis Island) in June 1919—something I’m writing about right now!
I believe imprisoned IWW members during the Spokane feee speech fight in 1909 conducted the first political hunger strike in the US: revolutionsnewsstand.com/2024/12/05/t.... But Edelsohn’s was definitely _one of_ the earliest, years before the more famous US suffragist hunger strikes.
The good folks at Antidote Zine have meticulously transcribed a wonderful event we did earlier this year after @akpress.org published "The Jewish Anarchist Movement in America." Featuring editor @kenyonz.bsky.social with guests Anna Elena Torres and @shaneburley.bsky.social!

Joe Hill did join the PLM’s forces in Tijuana during the Mexican Revolution. There’s a chapter on this in William Adler’s excellent biography
Plus, a free espresso machine and amazing views!
I was excited when I first stumbled upon this article, for exactly the reasons you mention—Johnson was a completely forgotten figure. Glad to see somebody else picking up that thread and seeing where it lead!
A Rutgers professor has been forced to flee the country for his safety, after targeting by a far-right student group that was *checks notes* claiming they felt unsafe.
I'm horrified.

I have copied hundreds of NARA files from the Red Scare, but unfortunately not that one. However, this account from one of the Deer Island detainees also exists: catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/10169...
Truth
So many well-meaning Americans have a reasonable view of immigration—but not enough understanding about how the system actually works.
