Really lovely to come on here after a day in the IRL and see people saying nice things about writing code instead of just the pretence that it's all an inconvenience nobody ever liked anyway. Makes me want to try to remember to say nice things about the crafts I love so the lies can't win so easily.

'I speak the language of the rocks' is such a beautiful way to express it, I'll be thinking about that for a while.
"it doesn't matter what the code is all that matters is that it runs and produces the desired result"
liar. what you're saying is bullshit. you know it's bullshit and you're saying it anyway
Imagine being a coder but thinking there's no artistry to writing code. What an empty existence
PSA for those who have switched over from Windows to Linux for gaming (via Steam):
As you may know, each game running via Proton is given its own prefix, simulating locations like Documents / Appdata to house saves + configs.
That prefix, and all its files, is deleted ENTIRELY upon game uninstall.
My little one had a nap on me this afternoon which meant I had some time to thrash out basic saving and loading data in my new 'Rising Tide' productivity software, yay! Now I'm just worried she won't go to bed until midnight and I will be too tired again to finish preparing for school next week. 🙀
A slightly grainy, zoomed-out photo of the launch of Artemis 2, showing the rocket plume climbing into the blue sky.
I took this photo of Artemis 2 with a TLR film camera from the 1950s

Our kid's assessment of the first two-thirds or so of the movie: "It's like everything in there was terrible forever and now they get to have some fun! And then more terror."
Amazing in all the time we've known one another my wife and I have never watched Shawshank Redemption together until tonight. We both had to study it in high school and we both still like it which is a testament to the movie I think. 🤭
It should honestly be very simple: is it trained on copyrighted material? Done. Thats it. It’s illegal. There are no other arguments to be made. There’s all sorts of other arguments we can make after that, but until they fix that then it doesn’t matter. It’s illegal. They should be in jail.
Poor girl! Wishing her and all of you well.
For some reason this has me thinking about the time the lot who run the Australian Census claimed the Census got DDoS'd and it turned out they just had an inadequately prepared setup for the volume of people coming online to complete the census on the night you are supposed to complete the census. 🙃
Never let anyone ridicule you out of having a go at building something yourself if you want! But do seek out other knowledgeable people for help and to pool resources with. It's not about the money. But actually you don't need to judge the cost of it by your first awkward attempts either...
I guess this is resonating with some but man it's a real choice to be punching down on people who like to build stuff in the era of 'just get the AI to do it' 'just buy it from TemuZon' 'we're probably going to end up at war with everyone who facilitates our current consumer goods utopia'.
Love all the vibe coding jokes on here every time this place breaks in some stupid manner, it's one small point of light in the dark space of having to click 'Post' twice.
I have a theory that if you did a Venn diagram of Harry/Meghan haters and TERFs it'd be almost a circle. All deeply weird people with an intrusive interest in other people trying to do the best they can with the life they have.
It's really funny how certain salty international media outlets and their useful idiots are trying to make out there's some Australian backlash against Prince Harry and Meghan. I think most people in the country either don't care about them in the slightest or think they're all right. 🤷
Long day with the kids but catching up on some of the literal piles of housework tonight, feels good. 🤭
Would have been more catching up without a few days of Stardew Valley BUT WE DON'T WORRY ABOUT THAT.
I believe (someone correct me if this has changed) Spotify now has a threshold on their platform of 1000 streams per song a year before they will give you royalties for that song. So I wouldn't put it past them...
I was midway through a whole rant about how outraged I was that parasaurs got lumped in with 'other' when pterosaurs aren't even really dinosaurs, then I noticed they addressed that already. I may be too invested in this matter. 😂
I'm pretty mad right now but I just gotta keep telling myself, 'calm green feathers... calm green feathers.' 🤭
I'm so mad about this because I didn't even want my Smashwords accounts to be migrated in the first place. They never bothered asking anyone. Now I have to log into accounts I never asked for and don't use that want to mess with my payment details that shouldn't be on there in the first place.
I can't believe I'm having to go view and delete some questionable tentacle porn I wrote while I was figuring out self-publishing like five or six years ago just because Draft2Digital doesn't understand consent any more than my fictional tentacle sex plant did.
Let's not forget Draft2Digital were flirting with AI licencing bullshit not that long ago. They passed it off as 'just asking our community uwu!' but I hope nobody buys that any more. They have no morals and should never be given the benefit of the doubt again even if they chicken out on this.
Ugh hey @draft2digital.bsky.social you rancid buttholes how do I just delete my entire account(s) THAT YOU CREATED WITHOUT MY CONSENT.
Wait so after migrating my Smashwords accounts to their system WITHOUT MY CONSENT because I DID NOT WANT to be signed up with them, now @draft2digital.bsky.social thinks they're going to steal money from me for a service I did not ask for and do not use? I was right, they really are trash.
I never bought into the 'every child should be taught to code' meme, but I sure wish that was the questionable take we were still rolling with these days!
I was just thinking about writing a little program for the micro:bit to randomly select review topics for school next week, caught myself going, 'and then I can show him the code for added educational value if he's interested!' and had a bleak little chuckle.
Yeah the Onion would have been proud to write this one I think...
