5. Rough digital painting of an orange cat taking a nap in an old oak tree.

My tribute sketch to Angel’s Egg
I remember watching Angel’s Egg for the first time and thinking about how beautiful the film was, I couldn’t resist drawing the girl and her egg

For sure. Every person I introduce the game has to pick their jaw up off the floor as soon as that intro begins.

Vagrant Story's hand-painted shadows weren't new at the time, but damn did they did it so well. Pinnacle game art for the PS1 generation.

Soren Johnson on keeping his game studio small: 'You get better games if you take longer to make games' The Old World designer has a "giant list of games it'd be fun to make," but Mohawk Games will move at its own pace.

I think about this a ton. A VERY high percentage of games that have had a huge impact on me took time to cook, pivot, or fully rework.

A luxury in today's climate for sure, but it's cool to see some companies pulling it off by keeping their burn extremely lean.

I really like playing Returnal with my kid but I feel like its difficulty would be less volatile if they solved getting off-screened by teleporting enemies.

Maybe Saros evens things out?

Eclipsium - Official Release Window Trailer
Eclipsium - Official Release Window Trailer YouTube video by GameTrailers

Adios down, which I'll def continue to think about. Now for Eclipsium! I'm about an hour into it and I'm in love with how absolutely WILD it looks.

Dithered first person hand art is a delightful aesthetic I didn't know I still needed (Lucid Blocks gets a nod too).

So hey! In more concrete terms: I got hit by the Epic layoff yesterday.

- Looking for Senior/Principal/Lead-ish roles around Level Design, Technical Design, Systems Design, etc.
- Strong preference for US/Seattle/Remote

Crush Depth, A Short Hike, Metal Garden, Caput Mortum, and Routine are now complete. It's so awesome being able to actually finish games with a ton of heart and just... move on to other great stuff.

Save 30% on Metal Garden on Steam Travel through an overgrown megastructure, and discover what lies beyond it. Metal Garden is a short, atmospheric singleplayer FPS game.

I can't believe how much time has snuck up on me, but today is already one year anniversary of Metal Garden's release!

(It's also 30% off right now for the Steam Spring Sale!!)

Well would you like at that! My investigation into the origins, themes, foundations, and modes of what I call the "weird space opera" is live on ARB! I look at The Centauri Device (duh) and Web of Angels (not so duh) to find the working principles of this beloved and odd sub-genre!

New weapon type for FlyKnight: Wands

I want to empower players that enjoy spellcasting and wands are a way to, not only do some damage, but recharge your mana inbetween spellcasts.
Of course if you whip it out to enemies that are weak to magic it kind of shreds on its own lol.

Started and finished Metal Garden last night because of this post! Thanks!

Phenomenal level design. Big Half-Life vibes throughout the whole thing. Little touches like the bison(?) were so cool and made the world feel fleshed out.

Really great ref.

Nine inch nails on the satellite stage during their latest tour.

Yes! I've loved their music since high school and I finally got to see them on this same tour. I know their AV was always highly rated but I was not prepared!

Amazing set.

Really enjoying Horripilant so far. It's like someone made a Vermis/Incremental mashup just for me.

Here's a small portion of an animated bumper I made to promote a video game from @owlcatgames.bsky.social (Blind Descent). Seeing the latest advances in generative AI and how they've invaded space, I feel lucky to have at least produced this little piece from start to finish 🥲.

X-Wing (Totally Games/LucasArts) was released circa 33 years ago.

I find it hard to accept that so many of my fond memories are a third of a century old. 😅

Unreal graph showing the SerializeItem nodes that handle custom blueprint-centric data.

Unreal graph showing the SerializeItem nodes that handle custom blueprint-centric data.

Being able to add custom data for the save/load in any blueprint is also insanely useful. It just works. Or this function can be used to post-process the serialization.

You'll have to add automatic component serialization where the actor itself gets handled, but that's not terrible.

I see this talk's technique rarely mentioned in the wild, so it makes me a little nervous, but if it's what they recommend AND it works with cross-platform save interfaces, great!

This is a super useful Epic talk on savegame serialization. I've reimplemented a basic version and it does seem you can store off object references and reconstruct them fairly easily. 🙏

Having a human-readable copy of every save file is SO USEFUL.
