I love spurs. I've supported them for as long as I can remember. I used to watch them when Dean Austin and Justin Edinburgh as fullbacks. It was a while ago. They've given me some of the greatest moments of heartbreak and frustration of my life. Also, on occasion, moments of absolute joy. I love how we're named after a Shakespeare character. I love how it's more important that his attitude is fearless and relentless than whether he actually wins. I love the daring and the doing. I love the echoes of glory. The appointment of Roberto De Zerbi as manager, despite his having signed and then actively, vocally supported Mason Greenwood, is a slap in the face for survivors of abuse and sexual violence. It's a slap in the face for women who support the club (which is why Women of The Lane have publicly opposed his appointment) and for marginalised people, who are more likely to be victims of these kinds of attacks - which is why his appointment is opposed by Proud Lilywhites and SpursREACH- the LGBTQI+ supporters group and the group representing fans from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds.
I'm not going to go into the details of what Greenwood was accused of here- it's not hard to find the audio recording of him doing it you really need to hear it - nor of the ways in which De Zerbi has supported him while minimising what he did, and portraying him as a victim. All of that is a Google search away if you need to find it. But this appointment is a fucking disgrace. Anywhere where there's huge amounts of money on the line is inevitably going to end up with a lot of people being morally compromised. Other clubs have behaved abominably in similar circumstances. Perhaps Vinai Venkatesham honed his ability to ignore the obvious harms done by tremendously rich men at the expense of women in his time with our neighbours. None of that makes this ok or excusable. A few days ago I would have said absolutely fuck the people at the top of the club for their obvious incompetence and arrogance. Now it's clear that their incompetence is utterly overshadowed by their profound moral cowardice and corruption.
Absolutely fuck them for making it impossible for me to support the team I've supported since I was a child. Fuck them for their pollution of something which, despite it all, still stood for something beautiful, collective, profound and poetic. But far more than that, fuck them for the message they're sending to women supporters and women more generally, and for the harm they're doing to survivors. I'll be at Clapton CFC until these cunts are out of my club.
Fuck Roberto De Zerbi. Fuck Johan Lange. Fuck Vinai Venkatesham.
Speaking as a Londoner I can confirm that this is the plan.
There are days when you really understand how a lifetime of being a spurs fan is really good training for a lifetime of being on the left.
*ahems in fugazi* youtu.be/dyu1Fy91qFM?...
First three episodes are a bit meh (relatively speaking). Be surprised if you're still feeling this by the time you hit episode 8...
Sacked a manager just before a final. Sacked a manager after winning a cup final. All that's left is to sack a manager during a cup final now.
Reggie Watts statement, 1 of 2: “I was disappointed to see that Thom's statement centers his hurt feelings and frames his fans' demands for him to speak up as a "social media witch hunt," instead of recognizing the urgency of their call for him to speak out against the world-historical humanitarian crisis in Palestine. I hope Thom will reflect and decenter himself from the public outcry against the genocide, because if he and his artistic legacy stand for love and humanity as he asserts, he can come to see his fans' actions as an act of loving solidarity with suffering people-a needed affirmation of our humanity in these dark times.”
Reggie Watts statement 2 of 2: “I also want to address Thom's repetition of a common rhetorical tactic of those who are devoted to maintaining the status quo, that one cannot speak up or demand an end to the genocide unless they fully understand the deep "complexity" of this historical conflict. I urge Thom's fans to reject this conviction-neutralizing, demobilizing sentiment and trust their hearts. You don't need to be a geopolitics scholar to know that starving children and slaughtering families is wrong. Your membership in the human family gives you authority and, indeed, responsibility to speak up. All positive change starts with conscious and loving people raising their voices and working together to bring a better world into existence. Please keep fighting until our sisters and brothers in Palestine are free.”
Reggie Watts addresses Thom Yorke’s statement on Palestine and it’s good
Used to think he was probably a twat. Kinda surprised to discover he's an actual idiot.
