Unfalsifiable by Design: A Year of Trying and Failing to Reproduce a Human Microbiome and Autism Study The myth of open data, reproducibility, responsibility, and accountability in science, and your role in it

How every layer of science's "self-correcting machinery" failed when Iva Veseli and I simply wanted to reproduce the findings of a high-profile study on gut microbiome and autism:

Two questions:
(1) How not to MISS an outlier? (2) Can you tell if a poster was made by AI or by a human?

(1) 🤯 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗲? MAD? IQR? SD? And with which threshold: 1.5 or 2 IQR? 2 or 3 SD?🤯

Thank you so much Surya! It was actually so insightful to discuss with you (and with the other jury members), thank you for coming up with really thought-provoking questions! (I now look at my model with much more suspicion...)

Is this interesting for you? Stay tuned for more! We applied this protocol to other scenarios, and found very interesting behaviour 👀

Briefly, we measured contrast thresholds for performing an array of tasks on simple visual stimuli across exposure durations ranging from 150 microseconds (!) to 100 ms. Bloch's law accounted well for forced-choice detection and discrimination, as well as subjective visibility judgements!

📝 Preprint alert 📝

Recent reports showed violations of Bloch's law (aka intensity-duration reciprocity) in visual perception.
Me and @axc.bsky.social reassessed these violations using a modern LCD-based tachistoscope:

If you are up for a nice academic battle, consider responding to our BBS paper "Studying unconscious processing: contention and consensus". The deadline is October 15th. Link below!

The call for commentaries on our BBS paper is out now (deadline October 15): shorturl.at/Hu3Yu. In the paper (shorturl.at/4Rbk6), we provide recommendations and outstanding issues about designing experimental paradigms, analyzing data, and reporting the results of studies on unconscious processing 👇

Absolutely incredible work led by @patxelos.bsky.social and @dsotob.bsky.social - such a compelling case of unconscious perception! Privileged to have been a little part of this 🧠

BBS just issued the call for commentaries, and we would LOVE to get yours!! The deadline is October 15th, and the reference number is BBS-D-24-00489R2. Looking forward to hearing what you think about our suggestions for how to study unconscious processes!

Unfortunately it's another of these laws, Bloch's law. If you are interested, we will soon post a preprint confiming its validity with simple stimuli and an array of perceptual tasks. We are also testing it on complex realistic stimuli and results should also be ready soon
