It’s finally happened. After 18 months. Finally, a media merger you can root for.

Can you accept that and move on?

OK.
1: The OP called for historical references and I leaned into that.
2: Looking foolish and uninformed is your perception, not my reality. I am old enough to remember a lot about apartheid South Africa.
I have apologised and apologise again for treating a serious matter with such frivolity.

If the permanent secretary told the PM vetting was competed when it was not then that's on the secretary. If the PS failed to see the risks or overruled a recommendation then that's on the secretary.
If the PM announced the appointment before getting the OK from the secretary, that's on the PM.

Exactly. The offer is subject to vetting, so announcing the appointment before vetting completes is a problem.

It's not protocol to compete vetting before announcing senior appointments?

14 hours ago 4 0 2 0

Starmer announced a senior appointment before vetting was competed. This is s clear breach of protocol, bypassing a process that was designed to prevent exactly what happened.
He could have avoided this problem by waiting for the vetting report.
He created the problem, so he is responsible for it.

My apologies.
I did not intend to minimise anything.

Apartheid South Africa was bad, but Trumps's America might be worse.

So either way it is not the vetting team that is at fault. They give their report to the permanent secretary, not the minister. The secretary usually follows the vetting recommendation and decides what information to pass on to the minister or cabinet.

So I have two questions about this.
1: This appointment was announced before vetting finished. Isn't that the PM falling to follow procedure?
2: The person responsible for risk management is the permanent secretary, so doesn't the final approval come from them and not the vetting team?

Just a thought: How about we stop shaming the poor for buying things that may not be essential, and start shaming the rich for making a profit off things that are essential?

Finland ends homelessness and provides shelter for all in need - scoop.me In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Why? The country applies the "Housing First" concept agains homelessness.

“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back to a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

IT SAVES PUBLIC MONEY to house people.

There are other examples. One that comes to mind is Paddy Cosgrave. Shortly after the Hamas attack on Israel Paddy tweeted to the effect that we should not excuse war crimes even when done by friends. This was read as antisemetic and he was forced out of the company he founded.

Ok. I'll stick to direct evidence and experience rather than generalisations.
I have been accused of antisemitism more than once after criticising Israeli foreign policy or the actions of the IDF.

On the other hand few Shia Muslims would claim criticism of a government (any government) is an attack on their religion. Many Jews seem to think speaking against Bibi is blasphemy.

It is impossible to overstate the importance of this. If that current collapses the climate here will change rapidly and dramatically with freezing temperatures becoming routine for many months a year.

AMOC collapse is the biggest threat to Europe. Not migration, wokery or similar nonsense.

Blaming Trump’s behaviour on dementia is an insult to all the individuals living with & dying from dementia. This is his personality. Don’t provide him with excuses.

TRUMP IS INSANE.
HE IS EVIL.

MY HUSBAND HAS DEMENTIA.

HE IS NOT INSANE

We here in Ireland are famous for our extremist governments, having used PR-STV since the founding of the state.

(For those who don't know: every government here has been one or other of the two main centre-right parties, usually in coalition with Labour, Greens, independents, or Social Democrats.)

I had someone argue with me that the national popular vote compact was bad because the founders never said one person, one vote. 🙄

Same as every study before it. If only the true believers of MAGA and elsewhere could be swayed by simple facts. 🙄

So it is not OK to have a nuclear weapon!?
Gods forgive me but I actually agree with Trump on something.

... but did no-one tell him who invented them? and the only country in the world ever to use them?
