Small mercies: first day in 2.5 weeks my eyes are not in pain from tree pollen
Van Gogh's The Starry Night
So yes, there's a little bit of Baltimore and a little bit of half-billion-year old hydrothermal vent in The Starry Night.
The appropriate coda to the Russell Brand episodes of @maintenancephase.bsky.social pod. www.instagram.com/reel/DXT_328...
Also the special chili crisp furikake from Kyoto is the best stuff ever. I could eat it straight out of the bag.
Black bowl with rice, chili crisp furikake, roast asparagus with garlic, pickled cuke and seaweed, TJ’s miso black cod
The Trader Joe’s miso black cod is very good. I messed it up and accidentally broke it all up but it still tastes good.
The summer strawberry was my fave and that taste takes me back.
Giant black Newfoundland dog shaking itself
Black Newfoundland dog lying down like a puddle
An adorable black hole. 🐕
Please don't use speaker phone while in library. Ask for headphones at the front desk.
Only a fallen society needs this sign
Was on a walk when a man was on a run and went past me, yelling, “Please don’t go! Please don’t go! Don’t go!” Was he singing along to a song or talking on the phone?
My mother’s first memory is her cousin being chased and harassed by Japanese soldiers, and her father narrowly escaped being killed by them when they were looking for him because he looked Japanese and spoke Japanese perfectly. He pulled a “he went thattaway”.
Germans all still get so many jokes about being Nazis. But we retconned the awful stuff the Japanese did during WWII which was pretty much on par. But because the US was afraid of the spread of Communism it was all downplayed and everyone is aww Japan is all zen perfectionism, anime and the future.
And if you're underread on the subject and also am not feeling up to the task of exposing yourself to a pretty gory list of atrocities, I feel like this IG reel perfectly captures Asian foreign relations re: Japanese war crimes www.instagram.com/reel/DPIpNyq...
Anyways that's an odd and unexpected sequel update to the night of martial law. The president I'm referring to is this guy, whose double chin you may remember from the livestream he did while jumping a fence to get to the National Assembly to vote
Thr South Korean president criticized Israel, Israel got super mad about the mention of the Holocaust, and not the far worse reference. The president compared them to imperial Japan, which is like the worst thing a Korean can call anyone or anything www.theverge.com/policy/91358...
Did I cry because:
1. I am genuinely not ok
2. Because I’m not used to being cared for in this way
3. EVERYTHING is genuinely not ok
4. Luteal phase of my cycle
5. Perimenopause
6. Late stage capitalism
7. All of the above
TFW you see your “overwhelmed” colleague posting “thought leadership” posts on LinkedIn throughout the work day (as she anger posts on Bsky).
In Japan please.
Haha can I join you in Iceland? 🤣
Almost cried twice this week when colleagues asked me if I’m ok. So burned out and being told to take vacation. Any cheap ideas near DC and near water?
Hunter is not completely right, but he's not completely wrong either!
This is a longer essay, but having spent my entire career at WaPo as an opinion editor and then a columnist -- I have quick thoughts! 1/n
Many things are bad, but you don't have to be. You can be reliable and stable for yourself and the people you care about. Try to eat something, drink a big glass of water, and do one thing at a time, even if it's an email.
I know how hard and overwhelming everything feels right now. Max loves you.
Schools also need more air tight policies and monitoring of what is and isn’t acceptable behavior. A recent grooming and abuse incident at Gilman the teacher in question was snapchatting with kids, which I find horrifying. And this was one way the teacher groomed and abused the kids.
I listened to Adults in the Room, which is about the reporter reinvestigating an incident of abuse by a teacher at her school that she reported to authorities. And the adults are awful. We really need to educate kids more about what constitutes grooming and abuse.
No updates it seems. :(
Blue and yellow macaw sitting on a wooden bench in front of a bakery
There was a guy who walked into the bakery with this macaw. The guy was an uhh real vibe.
It feels so weird to hear people say they use LLM to summarise a paper when the ABSTRACT exists - it's already been summarised for you!
If there's something you want to find out from the paper which isn't in the abstract, then maybe you should READ IT

NASA is one of the best things about this country. Hope. Innovation. Exploration. Wonder. Give them, the post office, and the national parks service all the money from ICE
This was about something with some very problematic people and I got so many excited/happy messages today and it was just so satisfying.
