Booked @british-airways.bsky.social flights for me and my daughter last week. Paid >£2,200, got confirmation & booking ref. Today I go to check the arrival time: booking gone. Called BA: “auto-cancelled by the system” with no notice. ~2 hs phone call to fix it. What if I had shown up at the airport?

Thanks to medical historian Martin Furmanski for driving the research of this hypothesis that might generate new leads about the origin of the 1918 flu pandemic. Just published in @jidjournal.bsky.social: doi.org/10.1093/infd...
A must read that illustrates the importance of free and independent press. And an amazing story.

🐄 NEW | Research from the CVR reveals how #H5N1 avian influenza has adapted to infect bovine cells, contributing to a major outbreak in dairy cattle in North America.
Multiple internal genomic segments of the virus drive its adaptation to bovine cells.

Couldn’t find a virology starter pack so here’s one to get the ball rolling. Repost/reply if you are a virologist so I can find and add you to the list!

Horses are natural hosts of influenza viruses so it’s no surprise that they can be infected by H5N1. We should monitor such infections in equine populations to prevent the emergence of novel influenza viruses that might affect horses and other animals, or even humans.
