Figure showing number of competitive grants mentioning women from 2015-2025. The number was rising until recently, with a precipitous drop in the last year.
At the end of 2024, the National Academies put out a report concluding the NIH has woefully underfunded women’s health research, and they suggested $15 B should be invested over the next 5 years.
Here’s what’s happened instead. Hard to study women’s health if you can’t say “women.”

Multiyear funding is an intentional scheme by Russ Vought to follow the letter of the appropriations law while still absolutely devastating American scientific leadership
"Time commitment and compensation are among the details that have not yet been worked out. However, the strategic initiative giveth and the strategic initiative taketh away, and we’d wager a guess that it giveth minimal compensation and taketh away loads of time."
Jay Bhattacharya: Why the NIH is pivoting away from mRNA vaccines
"As a vaccine for broad public use, mRNA technology has failed to earn the public’s trust."
What is striking to me about these is that the Justices candidly admit they are imposing their will without understanding the merits of the case.
To be clear, I’m 100% on your side! 😬

What has changed in mama bear brain (well, actually mice) to make her risk her life to attack a potential threat and protect her young? Oxytocin is the key! Happy to share our new study led by two awesome postdocs: Takashi Yamaguchi and Rongzhen Yan.

American higher Ed is a golden goose that’s delivered medical, tech, and science innovations, bolstered soft power internationally, and is one of the largest employers in every state.
This admin is doing everything it can to kill it.
Same goes for every "genius" academic or scholar.
I’m delighted to share that I’ll be attending the @uofdenver.bsky.social Clinical Psychology PhD program this fall, mentored by @drzoersmith.bsky.social and @truedrdoom.bsky.social! Looking forward to continuing my work with maternal and children’s health🤰🏽🧠

That's the cost of the Trump administration's mismanagement, as estimated by a new tool from @ourpublicservice.bsky.social:

$1.26B lost from terminated NIH grants as of Feb 2026.
$1,028.74 for each person in the country.
Jeff Bezos has $222 billion.
If he paid my wealth tax this year, we could fund insulin in America for everyone who needs it plus free school lunch for every kid in Texas—and have plenty of money left over.
And Bezos would still have $215 billion dollars to spare.
BREAKING: In response to huge cuts in Trump's budget request, NSF is shuttering its SBE directorate. Staff will be transferred to other parts of the agency and "grants that align with Administration priorities" will be maintained.

Graphic with the text "Action Alert: AAS urges advocacy against proposed cuts to science in President's Budget Request"
The President's Budget Request proposes a 47% cut to NASA Science, a 55% cut to NSF, and a 13% cut to the DOE Office of Science. AAS President Dr. Dara Norman sent a call to action to AAS members via email today. Urge your members of Congress to reject these cuts now! aas.org/reject-2027-...
Disconcerting to see the NYT write an article like this on the heels of overhearing an undergrad student in passing the other day say “yeah tbh I don’t think my female professor should be allowed to vote”
NPR: Trump's VA killed a home loan program. Vets are now losing their homes because of it
Trump was warned this would happen. He did it anyway.
Now, over 10,000 Veterans lost their homes. 90,000 more are on track for foreclosure. On top of cutting jobs, slashing benefits and throwing our heroes into an unnecessary war.
The most anti-Veteran President in history.
Wow, this is frightening: 95,000 scientists and researchers, gone. Brilliant minds no longer working to protect, help, and save people and the planet.
Don't take this sitting down.
I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.
I AM ONCE AGAIN SOUNDING THE ALARM THAT THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION IS WORKING TO PRIVATIZE OUR SCIENTIFIC ECOSYSTEM.
I defended my PhD 10 years ago today. That was the least remarkable thing that happened that day. Sharing something I wrote about it last year. Since then "the horrors persist but so do we." And with dignity.
Project 2025 wants women out of public life, this is one way to do it.
Is there a single AI company that isn't engaged in massive amount of theft?
Survivors don’t owe anyone their stories. Yet, when women do share, delayed disclosures can be met w/ questions/doubt. Research on #betrayaltrauma + #institutionacourage can help people understand silence + action. @jjfreyd.bsky.social theconversation.com/psychologica...
"US democracy is now back at the worst recorded level since 1965, when US civil rights laws first introduced de facto universal suffrage. All progress made since then has been erased, according to the report."
Bar chart showing the change in the number of providers — social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists — from the third quarter of 2023 to the end of 2025 on the x-axis and the number of providers from negative 400 to 800 on the y-axis. The trend starts with a peak of about 700 social workers and around 200 psychologists added in the third quarter of 2023, followed by a steady decline across all groups, dropping below zero by the first quarter of 2025 with social worker losses eventually dipping around 400.
The VA lost about 700 social workers and 500 psychologists and psychiatrists over the course of 2025 — a significant change for an agency that was adding mental health staffers nearly every month leading up to Trump’s return to office.

“They got money for wars, but can’t feed the poor.” — Tupac said it years ago… and here we are.
The Pentagon is now asking for an additional $200 BILLION for this war.
We always find the money for war.
But when it comes to housing, healthcare, or feeding people? Suddenly it’s crickets.
