Most bacteria remain uncultured with vast microbial ‘dark matter’ awaiting discovery.. to address this am excited to share EDEN - an enhanced domestication method to grow uncultured bacteria & new diversity. Using EDEN we isolate a new species active against MDR pathogens..

Out Now! Local peptidoglycan composition defines division site selection in Streptococcus pneumoniae #MicroSky
Fantastic work from Cristina Flors' lab! Really happy about our fruitful collaboration.
🦠 El grupo de Manuel Pazos en el CBM descubre una proteína clave en la división de bacterias peligrosas como E. coli. El hallazgo abre nuevas vías contra infecciones y resistencia a antibióticos.

Left: Results of spotting various supernatants onto lawns of Halalkalibacterium halodurans, Phycicoccus endophyticus, and Virgibacillus salexigens. a,b: top fraction (>3 kDa) of supernatant from Haloferax volcanii expressing an intact (a) or catalytic mutant (b) version of Woldo; c,d: bottom fraction (<3 kDa) of supernatant from H. volcanii expressing an intact (c) or catalytic mutant (d) version of Woldo; e: unfiltered supernatant from Halogranum salarium B-1; f,g: top fraction (>3 kDa) of supernatant from H. volcanii expressing (f) Danwoldo or (g) and empty plasmid control; h,i: bottom fraction (<3 kDa) of supernatant from H. volcanii expressing (h) Danwoldo or (i) and empty plasmid control. Top right: Structural overlay of zoocin A from Streptococcus zooepidemicus (UniProt ID: O54308) and Woldo, a candidate PGH from Halogranum salarium B-1 (UniProt ID: J2ZZK6), highlighting homologous M23 domains but divergent cell wall binding domains. TRD: target recognition domain. PG: peptidoglycan. Bottom right: Images of bacterial cells following exposure to H. volcanii supernatants expressing Woldo, Danwoldo or the control (as above). Bacteria are stained using LIVE/DEAD BacLight bacterial viability staining kit with ingress of red dye into bacterial cells indicative of cells with terminally compromised cell wall integrity.

Role of SdpA in β-lactam resistance.
Caulobacter crescentus is intrinsically resistant to β-lactams. This study in #mBio indicates that defects in peptidoglycan recycling compromise cell wall biogenesis, leading to antibiotic sensitivity in C. crescentus: asm.social/2kb

How rapidly do oxygen & ROS cross biological membranes and what does this mean for their detoxification?
Jim Imlay tackles this question in a new Perspective, which provides a quantitative framework for thinking about how gases interact with cells.

Schematic of potential complexes that form between TAM receptors and apoptosis cells or viruses at the cell surface
Our lab is excited to hire a postdoctoral researcher to study the mechanisms that viruses use to ‘hijack’ TAM receptors in viral spread. We are looking for someone who is excited to learn new techniques and work in a highly collaborative team! Please share!
