heres my challenge to everyone for next month, for black history month. any time you want to draw inspiration from art, like poetry, music etc, pick a black artist. web weave with langston hughes and james baldwin and jamaica kinkaid and hanif abdurraqib and derek walcott and set your edits to meghan thee stallion and beyoncé and eartha kitt and coltrane and invoke basquiat in your art and it can be fanworks or original stuff and importantly, it doesnt have to be about race. obviously be cognizant of the context of the art youre using because a lot of the artists i mention specifically create art about racism but like. take your white doomed yaoi ship and make a webweave to poem by langston hughes. set an edit to body by meghan thee stallion. engage with black art in all contexts.
The new month starts now.
Every time you want to draw inspiration from something this month, pick a black artist. Reply to this post with your work as you make it.

we need people to start taking down their Ring doorbells before they start being used as evidence against protestors
even something as simple as "my neighbor's doorbell caught me leaving my house in a certain attire or with certain people" could screw someone over

A black and white comic page numbered [31.] Mr. Cho sits in bed. Mrs. Cho sits on the edge of the mattress, staring at the door. Mr. Cho: [Yeobo… just go to sleep.] Suddenly, there is a knock on the door. Mrs. Cho rushes to the door. Mrs. Cho: [Nicky-ya!] Mrs. Cho opens the door, smiling tearfully: [Nicky-ya, I’m here now!] She stops suddenly. We see it was Mina who knocked on the door, not Nick’s ghost. Mina: [Umma… I wanted to check on you—] With a sob, Mrs. Cho flings herself into Mina’s arms. Mina looks down at her mother with pity. Mina: [Let’s just go to bed. It’s late. C’mon… just look at the time.] Nick’s new grave overlooks the house. Mina’s final words are laid over an image of his makeshift tombstone. Mina: [It’s already too late.] [END.]

thank you all so much for reading this month. I’m genuinely so moved by everyone’s kind words. I plan on posting some commentary and bonus stuff later on, so please stick around!
A black and white comic page numbered [30.] Stephanie: [What do you mean?] Jordan: [I...] Jordan slumps in her seat, looking away. Jordan: [Nuna, I'm a girl.] Stephanie looks at Jordan in surprise. Stephanie: [Then, what are you calling me Nuna for? You're supposed to call me Unnie.] Author's note: [Unnie: Korean for "older sister," used by younger females.] Jordan's eyes widen in surprise. Realization dawns on her. Tearfully, she smiles. Jordan: [Right!] Stephanie's car follows the road as it bends its way towards home. Stephanie, cheerfully: [When we go home, let's look through my closet to see if any of my old clothes fit you.] Jordan: [O-okay!] Jordan, to herself: [She doesn't know that I did that already...]

we’re so proud of you, Jordan 🩷
A black and white comic page numbered [29.] On the car ride home, Jordan rests their face in their hand and looks out hte passenger side window. Stephanie: [Hey... don't feel bad about going all "psycho 100" at the Cho's last night. They totally deserved it.] Jordan, looking back at her: [You really think so?] Stephanie: [Well, yeah. I mean... Nick's parents refused to bury him as a boy.] Stephanie narrows her eyes in a rare show of solemnity. Stephanie: [That was so wrong that his spirit couldn't even move on to the afterlife. Who am I to say otherwise to something like that?] Stephanie glances sheepishly to the side. Stephanie: [I'm probably not making any sense... I don't know much about this kind of stuff... It's not like I know anyone like that anyway...] Jordan turns away from Stephanie, unable to meet her gaze. Jordan: [Well, what if you did?]

can you believe this comic ends in 2 days
A black and white comic page numbered [28.] Jordan begins to tear up at Nick's words. Nick: [Love and acceptance aren things you shouldn't ever have to ask for. So, don't feel guilty asking for them.] A cut to the past-- Nick's unaltered school uniform, with its pleated skirt, is folded on the ground. Nick: [Had I swallowed my words and borne the pain of living as "Monica"... I would have died long before I stopped living.] Nick takes Jordan's hands in his own. Nick: [Jordan, thank you for putting me to rest. In return...] Nick takes Jordan's face in his hands and kisses her forehead through her hair. Jordan smiles, Nick's ghostly aura washing over her in little bubbles of light. Nick: [I will give some of my peace to you.]

a parting gift
A black and white comic page numbered [27.] Jordan curls up, drawing their knees to their chest. Jordan: [I get it. It's hard talking to big sisters, isn't it? They make such a big deal about everything...] Nick sits beside them. Nick: [Is that why you haven't come out to your sister yet?] Jordan, rubbing the back of their neck: [I mean... I... I'd just rather not be the person who makes a big commotion over myself for nothing.] Nick: [For nothing?] Nick rests his chin in his hands and leans in closer. Nick: [Are you sure it would really be for nothing?] In a starry vision, Jordan sees themself in a skirt and tall heeled boots, and being lovingly embraced by their sister. Nick: [The things you are asking for-- to exist as you are, to be loved and accepted... you know, you aren't asking for much, right?]

heart-to-heart
A black and white comic page numbered [26.] Jordan kneels before the grave, holding two small wildflowers in her hand. Unseen speaker, from behind Jordan: [I appreciate the sentiment, but I've never really been fond of flowers.] Jordan looks over her shoulder with a smile, seeing the ghost of a young boy in a school uniform with his arms crossed amiably. Jordan: [So, I'm finally able to hear your voice... Nick Cho.] Nick: [Once you know my name, it's much easier to hear me speak.] Jordan: [Then... wouldn't your sister be able to hear you?] Nick glances aside. Nick: [Yes. She would... if I ever spoke to her.]

our beloved ghost is here!
A black and white comic page numbered [25.] Stephanie rubs the back of her neck as she considers Mina's question. Stephanie: [Most people believe that there are good spirits, and evil spirits. But Jordan told me once that there isn't really sch a thing.] In a flashback, Jordan raises their arm in a show of supernatural power, while Stephanie looks out fearfully from behind them. Stephanie: ["Spirits can do good things, and they can do bad things," he said. "It's more important to figure out why they're here and what they need rather than try to figure out if they're really good or really bad." I think the same is true for living people. They're just ghosts that haven't died yet, after all.] Mina looks at Stephanie. Stephanie blushes under her gaze. Mina smugly rests her hand on her chin. Mina: [You're smart, Steph. We should hang out when we're both back at school.] Stephanie: [Oh! Um! Sure!] Mina: [Ah, it's tough being an older sibling, isn't it?] Stephanie: [Still, being the smallest one isn't easy either...]

feels weird to double post…
anyway, if you’re confused by a jump in the story, make sure you’ve checked out page 24 first! I posted two pages to make up for the missed one earlier this week
A black and white comic page numbered [24.] Nick's tailored school uniform lies at the bottom of a shallow grave dug into the earth. Two wildflowers are laid at the head of the grave. The tip of a shovel hits the ground with a CHK sound. Jordan kneels wordlessly in front of the grave. The scene pulls outwards, revealing Jordan and the grave are at the top of a hill, marked by a tall tree. Stephanie's car rests at the foot of the hill, where Stephanie and Mina lean against its side. Mina: [I don't regret what I said last night, but still, it's hard.] Stephanie: [Hm?] Mina: [I guess... I'm torn. Nick told them so many times in the end that he... was a boy. My parents were horrible to reject him after all that. But... I also remember how they cared for him all those years. So many sleepless nights.] In a flashback, Mrs. Cho kneels by the side of Nick's bed, watching him sleep with a weary expression on her face. Nick wears a surgical mask, and faces away from her. Mina: [They really loved him. So, are they good people deep down?] Stephanie looks at her with a sorrowful expression.

good people
going to be double posting today to catch up on the missed page from earlier this week! Page 25 will be up in a few hours.
A black and white comic page numbered [23.] Jordan slowly lowers herself to the ground, her glowing aura shrinking somewhat. As she lands, the paper debris that was tossed about by her powers settles on the ground. She picks up one close to her. Jordan: [I… will give him a proper burial.] Jordan looks at the paper; we see it is the photo of Nick and his friends on his fourteenth birthday. Jordan: [Once he is laid to rest with his true name… his soul will be able to move on peacefully.] Mrs. Cho remains on the floor in Mr. Cho’s arms, sobbing quietly. Mina looks down somberly. Stephanie: [Jordan…] Jordan, their face turned away from the others: [I’m not doing this for any of you. I’m doing this for Nick.]
THE DEAD NAME 🪦 page 23/31
speaking of queer spooky stories I rewatched Jennifer’s Body today. Even more yuriful than I remember
A black and white comic page numbered [22.] Mina: [Wait, please! I’m to blame as well!] Stephanie turns to Mina, alarmed. Mina approaches the floating, glowing Jordan. Mina: [I knew— we all knew— that he wanted to be buried as Nick. He told us many times in the end. But when the time came to prepare for the funeral… I didn’t speak up.] Flashback to Nick’s funeral, where Mina stands before a featureless crowd in front of a tombstone. Mina, from the present, off-screen: [I thought: “how can I go against my parents in this when we’re both in grief?”] Past Mina looks with blank, lifeless eyes at the tombstone. It reads: [Monica Cho. 2006-2021. Beloved daugher and sister.] Present-day Mina: [But in the end… I was only thinking of myself!] Tears roll down her cheeks. She is a mirror image of the dead-eyed flashback Mina, creating the appearance of a conversation between past and present versions.

Mina’s apology
A black and white comic page numbered [21.] Stephanie races up the stairs, followed by Mina, with a TMP TMP TMP sound. The light from the second floor illuminates Stephanie as she rounds the corner. Bits of debris, mostly paper, are flung towards them as if by a gust of wind. Stephanie, bracing herself against the blast, calls over her shoulder: [Watch out!] A sudden, powerful voice explodes into the air: [HOW DARE YOU?] The speaker is revealed to be young Jordan, who hovers several feet off the ground, a blinding light emanating from them. Paper and debris are blown about, including a tottering flowerpot. Stephanie and Mina reach the second floor to see Jordan above Mr. and Mrs. Cho, who huddle together on the floor. Jordan: [YOU BURIED YOUR CHILD WITH THE NAME HE TOLD YOU DID NOT BELONG TO HIM— AND IN DOING SO CURSED HIM TO WANDER THE EARTH!! AND STILL YOU SUMMONED ME TO GET RID OF HIM— KNOWING FULL WELL WHY HE WAS HERE!] Mrs. Cho cowers fearfully against Mr. Cho’s chest, clutching hum tight. Jordan: [DIDN’T YOU TELL ME HOW YOU WANTED A SON?] Mina stares in horror as she comprehends the scene. Stephanie glances at her in fear and concern. Jordan: [AND YET, WHEN YOU HAD ONE—] Jordan clenches her fist as she screams: [YOU DENIED HIM IN LIFE AND IN DEATH!!]

A black and white comic page numbered [20.] Mina and Stephanie sit on the front steps of the Chos’ house. Mina: [By the time we finally got Nick to a hospital… it… wasn’t long. Sorry, I…] Stephanie places a hand over Mina’s trembling one. Stephanie: [Hey, it’s okay. You don’t need to say any more..] FWOOM! A blinding light bursts through one of the second story windows, alarming Mina and Stephanie. They turn to look upward at it. Mina, confused: [That window! That’s Nick’s old bedroom!] Stephanie, afraid: [And I know that light…] Stephanie grabs Mina’s hand and pulls her up the stairs and inside the house Stephanie: [C’MON!]

spooky things are happening
A black and white comic page numbered [19.] Mina: [After Nick came out… my parents sent him to an all girls’ school out of state hoping that— I don’t know, the nuns or his girl classmates or God or SOMETHING— would change him back.] As Mina narrates, we see an image of Nick standing in a doorway, wearing the skirt and vest of the school uniform. He casts a shadow before him that has long, feminine hair. Mina: [But actually, I don’t think it was all that terrible for him.] Nick cheerfully tailors his uniform skirt into shorts. Mina: [I think he found a way to make it alright.] Nick walks down the school hallway, chatting cheerfully with the two friends from his fourteenth birthday photo. Mina: [My parents put their faith in that school, and they paid for it dearly.] The campus of Saint Perpetua sprawls behind a sign that states the school name and “welcome back!” Mina: [They opened their doors far too soon after the first pandemic lockdown. And when they realized their mistake, they sent their students home far too late.] Outside the pediatric ward of a hospital, Mina comforts her crying mother. Both of them wear face masks.

Nick’s story
A black and white comic page numbered [18.] Mina and Stephanie sit on the front steps of the Chos’ house together. Mina: [In your message… you asked… if I knew anything about a boy who died at a young age.] Stephanie: [Yeah, sorry about that. (Shoulda worded that better, huh?)] Mina: [No, I… honestly, I had a feeling it had to do with… well… I rushed over as fast as I could when you sent that. I tried to send a message back, but I couldn’t get a signal on the train.] In Monica’s bedroom, Jordan looks at a photo she has found. The ghost stands a few paces away. Mina, from off-screen: [The boy I know, the one who died…] The photo is shown to be a young boy in front of his fourteenth birthday cake, wearing the school uniform from the closet door. Two girls smile behind him, in matching uniforms. Jordan looks up, in the direction of the ghost, with sickening realization. Mina: [It’s my little brother, Nick.]
