today we see MAGA Catholics desperately trying to revive this process, deliberately sidelining social justice concerns by claiming that "collectivism" is the real enemy
and that Trump — however morally compromised — remains its best opponent
needless to say, I couldn't disagree more
in part because of the headwinds of the Cold War, liberation theology and social justice became identified with totalitarianism and viewed as the church's enemy
as it identified more and more with the right
causing progressives to leave and intensifying the rightward shift
the article mentions "pastoral missteps" of the US church
I think chief among them was a purposeful centering — not just of the church, but the faith — on the opposition to abortion
alongside an equally deliberate sidelining of the church's teaching on (and Gospel messages of) social justice
