Folksy wisdom and wishful thinking in lieu of actual knowledge or expertise.

There's a contact form on the site, in case you (and maybe 1,000 of your friends?) would like to ask him directly. I'm sure he would love to hear from each and every one of us, multiple times.

In the last 4 days:

-- Elise Slotkin says she's being criminally investigated by DOJ
-- ICE illegally goes "door to door" in Minneapolis
-- FBI raids the home of a WP journalist
-- DHS illegally arrests, detains 100+ Somalians with legal refugee status

Sweet!

Hopefully the goofy, servile douchebag who calls himself our "representative" can go back to doing something almost useful: helping fat people pretend they're training to be SEALs.

Agree. It never occurred to me in 2020-1 that they would pretend the VP could just nullify an election. They have a lot more to lose this time around, and so I'd just like to think through all the potential shenanigans ahead of time.

If I believed they would work, I'd already have left the country.

I read this as naive and obdurate denial of the obvious, which is that laws only matter if people follow them, and that most of our Executive Branch has no intention of following any laws they don't want to.

But you do you.

I remember when there was "zero chance" that he would try to steal the 2020 election, or that the GOP would back him afterwards, or that he would try to extort a fake investigation from a world leader on a phone call, or defy the courts, or defy Congress, or invade Venezuela, or ...

That was nice.

"Shutting down the building" is just shorthand for "using the threat of violence to disempower Congress" one way or another.

Congress can pass whatever it wants, wherever it wants. But it has no power to enforce anything, if the Executive Branch simply says "no", as it has with the Epstein files.

Fair enough.

But, don't you think there is value in trying to anticipate how MAGA might try to remain in power?

Because MAGA is certainly trying to imagine how they can remain in power. And they obviously don't give a shit what any law says about it, so long as they can get away with it.

3 months ago 0 0 0 0

Exactly!

It doesn't matter what the law says, if all the people whose job it is to carry out the law decide they just don't want to honor the oaths they took when they were hired.

It could happen. There are a lot more traitors in the federal government now than there were in 2021.

Barring the Capitol was just a metaphor for abolishing or ignoring Congress, wherever it meets, using Trump's paramilitary forces muscle as needed.

But you're appealing to law. I know the law. None of this would be lawful, obviously.

I assume, based on abundant evidence, that the law means nothing to a large chunk of the people whose job is to carry it out.

It doesn't matter whether 3 or 535 legislators pass it, if a law isn't applied.

You'll never get the 4D chess argument from me. He's dumb as dogshit, and so are half his cabinet.

He's also a lunatic and getting crazier fast. So who knows what he might do, or what orders his lackeys would obey? Or make in his name?

I think his deteriorating state is why they're accelerating.

OK, fair enough.

"Judging by their effectiveness in breaking shit while pursuing the broad goals of Project 2025...", then? Because they have definitely been breaking shit at quite a clip.

Point being, they're good at finding pretexts and loopholes to convince bureaucrats to do what they want.

3 months ago 5 1 0 0

Judging by their effectiveness in carrying out Project 2025, they can get stuff done when they want to.

I doubt it would go well, but that doesn't imply that Bonespurs or anyone in his inner circle doubts it would go well. They all live inside an echo chamber that gets more batshit every day.

There's also a requirement that the Executive Branch carry out the laws the legislature passes, in order for them to be effective in any way.

Which brings us back to the Epstein files, lol. The Executive Branch carries out the laws Trump wants carried out, for the most part, and ignores the rest.

Yeah, my instant reaction to this now is always "let's assume for the sake of argument that ICE is just FINE with shooting legislators, as needed".

I'm trying to figure out how many loyal federal employees it would take to save us this time, assuming MAGA learns a bit from its mistakes last time.

3 months ago 0 0 2 0

That's likely, but ICE is huge now, and growing a lot this year. Couldn't they could keep people out of the Capitol?

Or are you assuming that ICE would also have to police the inevitable demonstrations nationwide?

I think we need to demonstrate like that now, before the next coup fully begins.

3 months ago 1 1 0 0

Not panicking, or despairing, and I will certainly vote, demonstrate, etc.

But what *actually* stops Trump from just saying on some pretext "we don't need Congress anymore" and ordering ICE to shut the building down? How many people have to make the right choice that day in order for him to fail?

I'm not trying to be a "doomsayer", just trying to game it out. I have no doubt that the people who want to see democracy fail are gaming it out on their side, as well.

States don't control the Capitol in DC or the feds, Tom.

Are we assuming Trump wouldn't try to use force, or assuming that armed forces would refuse to carry out his orders, or what? 25th?

Because I think it's safe to assume that he will do what he wants, if he thinks he might get away with it.

3 months ago 4 2 3 1

Yes, I am utterly ignorant as to why you think laws will matter if the people with guns decide not to play along.

You're telling me "the VP can't invalidate the votes!" like I don't know the law. But the VP nearly DID invalidate the votes, and no one here knows what would have happened if he had.
