When I was in high school in 2006, I once told a cute, older girl in a record shop that I loved Matthew Sweet and she was like "ME TOO, DUDE!" and then gave me free swag from his album, Altered Beast.

Cal, honey, put your shoes on, we're at grandmas.
Before you had a feed, tailor made to your liking, you used to have to search for vids you'd be interested in on YT. People need to get back in that habit. If you like slice of life indie stuff, punch it in!
A comment I get a lot, and I'm sure tons of other indie animation projects get, is "why doesn't this have more views?" and the answer is the algo. If you really want to find new stuff, you're gonna have to dig. We all put "indie animation" in our tags, you just gotta search!
Definitely check out both records! The lead singer is also responsible for a lot of CN themes (Teen Titans, Puffy AmiYumi, etc.)
The side projects are grea too! Their original guitarist, Jason Falkner, made one of my all time favorite records and it gets NO love.

I'm still waiting for them to just throw everything at the wall and make their version of Jellyfish's Spilt Milk. An album that's clearly homaging all their influences, but is just batshit crazy with the production and bombast.

I think my only neglibile issue with them is the "wear it on our sleeve" approach to their sound. If you've listened to enough Beach Boys, Carpenters, Big Star, or Todd Rundgren, the sounds become almost too eerily similar. But they do it so well I don't car, honestly.
Those boys are from my neck of the woods! One town over in Hicksville! It's cool to have a rad band represent my area.
It's definitely Flansburgh style power-pop haha. I interviewed him years ago, super sweet guy and he even offered to come down to my station and play some stuff. Never happened, but the offer was always on the table.
100%, I can hear that! Sounds a lot like his Mono Puff stuff.
I got into a lot of cool indie bands like the Salteens through Undergrads. Shame how the movie is using AI tweening. Still a legendary soundtrack.

They definitely have a big Rentals vibe to them. I was obsessed with this song in high school.

I think my favorite thing about Starstruck right now is our credits theme. It's so cute, lo-fi, and simple! Every time I hear it, it reminds me of the possibilities this project could have. My good friend Matthew wrote it and our composer, Michael Drew, added a cool synth that makes pop amazingly!
So happy to be heading back to LA this Friday! If you wanna hang out, lemme know.

I was a bold 8th grader.
People really want their rock to be organic and will always point out SOMETHING to make it not so. I sincerely feel like the social media age is killing the genre because they're picking apart any major success it gets by deep diving into the history of every band's financial status pre-success.
I worked in college radio for four years, NO one listened to my show and yet, I got tons of samplers and advance albums from indie acts trying to get on my show. Labels will leave no stone unturned.
I mean, that's just the state of music marketing in general. You kind of have to be a bit obnoxious to get a band out there these days. It sounds like SOMEONE at the label believes in them, so I'd consider that a win for real music, even if it's not some people's thing.
I don't think I've listened to ONE Geese song, but if we're complaining about human bands being pushed over AI, I think we're losing the thread a bit. They has four albums and decided to heavily market their latest. I don't see the problem?
He's selling a $60 re-release of Aliens Ate My Buick at the merch table and couldn't be bothered to play one song off it.
Also, the tech difficulties were painful. Not necessarily his fault, but just made everything awkward and sucked the energy out of the show.
Like, when done right, mash-up stuff is FANTASTIC. Look no further than Neil Cicierega's Mouth records, but I think it has to be done in a really engaging way and maybe I just felt let down.
Saw Thomas Dolby tonight and it was a bit of a bummer. He's one of my musical heroes and he mostly played a mash-up set of covers that overlapped and interconnected like a symphony and like...yeah, cool...but I wanna hear stuff off your records. He also used some gen AI in his visuals. Eugh.

Left my phone at the bagel shop and they don't open till 5 AM tomorrow. The most Long Island problem ever.
Hey, this is great news!
That being said, there's a bunch of smaller shows that could use YOUR support! Like mine!
It's called Failing Upward and it follows two long distance slacker friends trying to make it through their 20s!

Like, sincerely, this app rules. I never feel ripped off AND it promotes smaller bands.
I always love the idea of going to see a classic act I love, but that notion is becoming more and more unsustainable to be a regular thing with Ticketmaster in the mix.
Tom Kenny is an MVP for keeping his concerts affordable AND on Dice, dude.
