Angela Keller-Herzog from CAFES interview Judy Mackin from West Carleton Disaster Relief Climate change is not going away, and its effects are being felt year by year here in Ottawa. Some taxpayer funded services are in place for responding to climate disaster but they are far from adequate. Volunteers are needed to step up particularly in massive wards like West Carleton. Amalgamation in Ottawa has made it the largest municipality in the country by a massive margin and this calls for a lot of municipal services. Judy Makin has learned this from first hand experience and has spent years learning about and responding to weather caused disasters and she's discovered that the range of issues needing attention is massive and the knowledge and skills to go with this are also very substantial. Her organization has contributed hugely in this area and yet she can easily identify a lot of changes that need to be made. https://www.westcarletonrelief.ca/ Videos featured in this interview: 00:00 Lightning, rain, a flying trampoline and fireworks -- Canada day 2016 in Ottawa https://youtu.be/u-QpI26Ri7Y 00:51 2018 Ottawa/Gatineau EF3 Tornado 4K Time-lapse https://youtu.be/GZ4KYiE09zw 01:56 Living Through The Great 2018 Ottawa Outage https://youtu.be/_eWLRP3OSMY 03:05 2019 Ottawa Flood -- Army Deployed to Assist with Sandbagging Efforts https://youtu.be/P_CRPAsK9bk 05:08 Comparison between 2019 Ottawa River Flooding and 2021 Drought https://youtu.be/X8FUOWE_HEo 07:32 Massive flooding in Toronto blocking the Don Valley Parkway https://youtu.be/aR5YEEg5if8 07:54 2019 Ottawa Flood Update -- The Sandbag Wall that held back Britannia Bay https://youtu.be/O24UUN48dkw 08:23 Comparison between 2019 Ottawa River Flooding and 2021 Drought https://youtu.be/X8FUOWE_HEo 11:20 Aftermath: May 2022 Derecho & Ice Storm Flattens Ottawa Forest Destroying Thousands of Trees https://youtu.be/cV-tz1XxmIc 12:25 The Ice storm of 2023 - Drone shot: Stittsville suburb of Ottawa completely out of power https://youtu.be/oNECTZyMqLI 14:23 Nate's Epic and Dramatic Storm Cloud Timelapses Volume 1 https://youtu.be/NMP0EHvngJM 15:34 Drone Shots of the Wildfire Smoke over Ottawa (2023, extended, uncut footage) https://youtu.be/spbUv02B0uE 15:58 Ottawa River Ice Breakup -- Multi-Day Timelapse https://youtu.be/BdqxO0ma3DA 17:36 The great flood rain of 2023 (Ottawa Ontario Canada, 2023-08-10) https://youtu.be/NApJSwUMmvA 25:49 Aftermath: Thousands of Trees Destroyed by May 2022 Derecho in the Forest in Ottawa's Greenbelt https://youtu.be/_HcR8G-IfCE

I learned many things from @katharinehayhoe.com tonight (thanks @cafesottawa.bsky.social for hosting), but my main take away was to keep sharing my story. She delivers the same message again & again because people still get inspired and learn from it.
