I only interacted with him online, and in small ways, but he was always lovely and excited to do so.

Being chronically online, I saw much of the Smithsonian’s ‘Dr. Is In’ videos, and read a lot of the comments on them. Even YouTube’s infamously corrosive community loved and valued him.

Rogue is so good - it’s _surprisingly_ good. Really kept us glued to the screen the whole way through.

Bonus points because Stegosaurus is my favourite dinosaur!

My undergrad mammalogy prof had a blanket 'accepting all good-quality roadkill racoons' because they wanted to document and study the racoon baubellum. 🦴

Yeah - over a decade ago!
Just goes to show how far behind the public perception of these things are compared to what it actually going on - even for really popular and ‘well-known’ ones!

OMG one of ours was questing last night; yodeling and knocking over things in the laundry closet and zooming around the place.

Should've gotten a pet rock.

Damn do I love uintatheres.

They (and brontotheres) were in all my palaeo media when I was young, and they seem to have quietly settled into obscurity.

Such weirdos.

We were recently forced to move and had to buy a fridge.
Bought a refurb, had it delivered and installed the morning we moved.

Later that day it tripped the circuit. And kept doing it.

Turns out it needed a new heating element. In the meantime, we lost > $1k in vaccines and gained so much stress.🫠

Same! As soon as I stopped doing active research… what do I do that anyone cares to hear about?
I dunno.

Just a shifting mix of raw exposed nerves and complete dissociation over here.

Oh wow, do I have feelings about this and working in the museum exhibition space.

It’s an entirely uphill battle in a lot of situations. Entirely. 😭

Yeah, lots of people forget that, at their core, they are just hypotheses.

But - like hypotheses - some are objectively better than others!

And yet, there’s still a whole slew of researchers that don’t like them, don’t trust them, and don’t think they are important.

They certainly would be some wicked teeth!

Distal phalanges of a deer; these are the bones the deer stands on and out from which their hooves grow.

Homologous to the very last bone in our fingers/toes.

Like, an individual doesn’t HAVE to have an assignable sex. It’s fine if that’s an emergent property.

All the other arguments are spot-on.
I just felt they inadvertently slipped back into a “but then this one has NO sex and that’s CRAZY” .

What a great paper!

Funnily enough, though - I see an area where the authors (to me) inadvertently fall into an essentialism pit while trying to point out why gametic assignment doesn’t work (I.e., it doesn’t work for individuals or non- or post-reproductive age).

To me.. that’s fine?

There is No Consensus on Biological Sex At this critical moment when misinformation about sex is being applied to policy globally, scientific clarification on the definition of biological sex is valuable. Here, we evaluate the primary appr...

New study explains there is still no real scientific consensus on what sex is, and why gamete size--beloved of Rep state legislators--really doesn't work either since it is cannot be observed and thus proxies are inevitably used. [HT Denise Norris]

Today is International day of the seal, a time to celebrate all things pinniped! 🦭

Last year, I finally got to see Ontocetus posti from the early Pleistocene of the UK. This species is a close relative of the modern walrus that still has canines on its lower jaw!

Phil Tippett’s work has been with me for as long as I can remember. We taped “Dinosaur!” off the TV when it aired, and I watched it so many times it destroyed the VHS tape.

IMO “Prehistoric Beast” still hasn’t been met, let alone surpassed.

We have to go fridge-shopping tomorrow (had to vacate our rental bc our landlord is moving back in - hurray for the sudden 20% increase in rental payment we now have). 🙄

Good gods am I going to be sad if the only options are white, black, and silver.
