okayyy that's it!!! there's so much more i cld talk abt--and tbh prolly will--but here you go!! the narrative arc of vessel. it's abt fearing the night + fighting to survive it. it's abt convincing yourself each day that you're not alone, and doubting it each night. it's about cycles.

finally, he tells us that, tho we'll die (fall asleep/etc) one day and be forced to return to that "prisoner's cell", for now our life is "free". and yet, as he acknowledges that the night--and the fear--will return, he's still hoping he's "not [his] only friend". he still feels alone.

there aren't any references to day/night or being awake/asleep, but there *is* a single reference to death. he can "feel his death", or he can feel himself falling asleep/losing faith/not thinking. but he doesn't that. he wants to know (us? God?), he wants to see. he wants to say hello.

but!! the only references to day/night come when he talks abt wanting to "drive away" in the night, and how we, the reader (if we feel the same as him, anyway), wld also "do anything just to feel free"; to convince him otherwise, you'd have to spend the whole night with him.

last little thing: if thinking is associated with falling, that adds it to the ultimate awake/asleep dichotomy. wakefulness = life = faith = thinking = falling. which means, ofc, that flying/*levitating* = sleeping = not thinking = not having faith = dying. remember that.

what this song DOES talk abt, tho, is thinking. the 1st verse is about hiding your inner thoughts/feelings to appear "cool". the 2nd is about those (trains of) thought crashing to the ground ie. being revealed. but that's okay by him, because there's others who feel the same way.

so, we already know that dreams/sleep = death. Now we learn about the other half of the dichotomy: to be awake. being awake = being alive is fairly obvious, but there's the addition of both thinking *and* faith. Does that mean being asleep equals having no faith, and not thinking?
4. HOUSE OF GOLD
this one refers back to migraine with "dreams are dead" AKA to dream, to be asleep, is a kind of "death". the song itself is about feeling torn between two paths, obligation vs aspiration. another dichotomy! in this case, obligation means being awake, and aspiration, being asleep.

this one goes into exactly what that struggle is that he experiences at night. he explains what "the headache represents", and how it "will not let [him] sleep". so now we know the problem is that he *doesn't* sleep at night. this is also where we get the first sleep = death reference.

this song's very much about living ~in the moment, and holding on to those moments "where you know exactly where you're going". shortly after that, he clarifies that those moments when "time is slowing and it's frozen still" usually happen at night. day = movement, night = stillness

based on the quoted/highlighted lines, we learn that he feels fine in the morning, feels "imprisoned" at night/when he sleeps, that as the night approaches he feels he can be honest (or has a more negative outlook), but in the morning he has to put on a mask to hide that honesty
