The trick here, of course, is that because dogmatics is ethics, doing the dogmatic work thus *becomes* the practical application without placing ourselves so firmly at the centre of said work. Sneaky, I know.

What if we let ourselves believe that God (and thus God’s work) is that much more important than us (and thus our work)? What if we spent just a wee bit more time contemplating God before going back to thinking about ourselves?
Wrapping up my grading for intro theology and one thing that is striking is how many students want to make theology primarily about us. Few seem comfortable ending without a practical application to live out. Something to work on, I suppose (which is not a critique of practical application!).
A few years ago, I was asked to write a Syndicate response to @lisadpowell.bsky.social’s excellent book. It was delayed for all sorts of reasons, but the symposium went live with my response today. I’m very grateful to be a part of such a stellar lineup of scholars. syndicate.network/symposia/the...
The kind of thing you say when you’re definitely winning the war by a lot.
God is as God loves.
God loves the cha cha slide.
Blessed are you among men.
Every theology students has to go through a social trinitarian phase at some point, don’t they?
I wish Carter Hart nothing but the worst in this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs.
Logan Stanley is undefeated in this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs.
Congratulations, Auburn! Nice to see my former prof Dr. Wray Beal on the examination.
Peter Thiel doesn’t make as many mainstream headlines as Vance or Musk, but he’s just as evil as the best (worst?) of them.

It’s convocation day and everyone loves the John Knox hat.
A great article written by an alum about some of our soon-to-be Church Ministry graduates. I have had the pleasure of teaching all of them. www.prov.ca/church-minis...
H*ck yeah
The Pope isn’t messing around.
So close to getting to the summer TBR pile.
Smart of them to put Rachel’s name on it so that it goes to someone responsible.
Now that I’m working through them, I may dare to say that it “worked,” and I’m getting some really creative readings of doctrines rooted in/related to God’s love.
One of the assignments was to read Bauerschmidt’s book The Love that is God + develop his claim that all Christian doctrine works out of the idea that God is love in relation to their doctrine. That assignment went well, but what I really wanted to see was how that idea reframed their final papers.
For my intro theology course this year, I asked students to choose a doctrine and most of their assignments were then built around examining that doctrine in various ways, both in traditional academic and new creative ways.
Bingo.
This evening I was reading to my five-year-old from his children’s Bible. It was the story of Jesus calling his disciples, and they changed the name of Simon the Zealot to Simon the fighter. When I read that, my son exclaimed “SIMON THE FARTER?!?!”
I wonder how much “strong endowments” plays in relative to the other two categories.
The Leafs used ChatGPT to explore potential trade returns on deadline day? That’s the funniest sports headline I’ve read in some time.
JD Vance’s attempts to school the Pope on theology should be all the evidence we need to promote the public good that is religious education.
You know the Pope is good when the Empire doesn’t like what he has to say.
Yet he never came through on buck-a-beer…
