Scientific American cover article: Woman the Hunter: New science debunks the myth that men evolved to hunt and women to gather

1. Does research by @caraocobock.bsky.social & others, widely reported in SciAm & elsewhere, finally dispel hunter-gatherer myths that have persisted since the 60's?

In a preprint led by @vivek123.bsky.social The Meanings & Dividends of Man the Hunter: osf.io/preprints/os... we respond 🧵🧪

These are 5 autumn migration routes travelled by the same common tern. He’s not the only one showing such flexibility, and it pays, because in our new paper, published by @royalsocietypublishing.org, we show that route flexibility is associated with minimized headwind exposure: tinyurl.com/4dawhwzj

😲 Did you know that #forests are turning from carbon sinks to carbon emitters?

🌳On International #ForestDay 2025, we need to reflect on the state of this ecosystem in Europe, and its crucial role in the fight against the climate crisis.

Hope for endangered penguins as no-fishing zones agreed off South Africa Deal will restrict fishing near colonies on Robben Island and Bird Island for 10 years, after long debate between industry and conservationists

Great news for the Critically Endangered African Penguin! 🐧

South Africa has agreed to establish no-fishing zones around six major breeding colonies, a huge victory thanks to the relentless efforts of our National Partner @birdlifesa.bsky.social 🌍💙

Fig. 1a from the article: Flight initiation distances (FIDs) in response to an approaching human at two sites: the former Konrad Lorenz Research Center (KLF) and Cumberland Wildpark (CWP). Data are separated by the goose's starting posture (open circles = sitting, closed circles = standing), which strongly influenced FID. Mean ± SE FID for approach trials conducted at each site, with data points for each individual trial overlaid.

NEW PAPER: Greylag geese adjust their flight initiation distance based on environmental context and show consistent individual differences across years, possibly balancing predator avoidance with energy and opportunity costs.
