The Fairness Foundation @fairness.bsky.social does really important work. It was a privilege to get to talk to them about asset manager power and rent extraction in housing and infrastructure

who would have thought that one of the best books of Frankfurt School critical theory in the year 2026 is a history of the energy economy inspired by Adorno, Schmidt and Bogdanov? Happy pub day @ueberdruss.bsky.social !

Very underwhelming, this. Just tinkering at the edges. More than anything, it's further evidence that there aren't easy answers. _Really_ delinking electricity and gas prices (this move actually does nothing of the sort) raises spectre of price cannibalization... which is why the govt won't go there

Why are governments so dependent on private capital for investment and how do big institutional investors shape our economy? Find out more in our interview with @brettchristophers.bsky.social: www.faircomment.co.uk/p/a-brief-hi...
Forever impressed by the incredible work that @adriennebuller.bsky.social has done to create The Breakdown, and their new issue is out next month. It's going to be a good one!

Witness every newspaper columnist on earth....
I believe firmly in the value-added of (good) editorship. One of the big problems with the paid substack model is that there is nobody who is always worth reading, _especially_ when they feel compelled to pump out "content" whether they have something useful to say or not
I just started reading Middlemarch by George Eliot and it's *stunning* barely a few pages in. Unlike Austen or the Bröntes, this wasn't a popular translation in my very young heavy reader days, and somehow I'd never read it despite being familiar with G. E. #BookSky
My new masterpiece: vibe-coded chart showing the collapse of the New Deal financial order and rise of Wall Street, by flow of deposits from small to big banks.
From 1990 to 2024 NYC banks more than double their deposit share. Small banks and thrifts go from more than half of deposits to <20%.
… Publishing a book is a real privilege and a collective endeavour. Thanks in particular to my editor, Ed Lake, at @wnbooks.bsky.social. I hope you all enjoy THE ASSET CLASS as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Who should own the value of land?
New report by Ed Shepherd and myself on the political economy of land value capture. A major research undertaking (incl 50 interviews) examining the power relations that structure how land values are (unjustly) distributed in England.

There is finally some excellent reporting on the role of agents in recruiting overseas students to Higher Education. As anyone who works in HE will already know, it is a relentlessly grim situation, but the detail and stories is still shocking to read.

Not endorsing the Green position but "Price is the fairest rationing mechanism" is obvs ideological claptrap: how is it "fair" if those for whom price is no issue don't have to ration?
