I don't remember seeing an image of Earth before that captures the (thin, fragile, tiny layer of) atmosphere so clearly. I mean, look at that.

Captured by the Artemis II crew during their lunar flyby on April 6, 2026, this image shows the Moon fully eclipsing the Sun. From the crew’s perspective, the Moon appears large enough to completely block the Sun, creating nearly 54 minutes of totality and extending the view far beyond what is possible from Earth. The corona forms a glowing halo around the dark lunar disk, revealing details of the Sun’s outer atmosphere typically hidden by its brightness. Also visible are stars, typically too faint to see when imaging the Moon, but with the Moon in darkness stars are readily imaged. This unique vantage point provides both a striking visual and a valuable opportunity for astronauts to document and describe the corona during humanity’s return to deep space. The faint glow of the nearside of the Moon is visible in this image, having been illuminated by light reflected off the Earth. [alt text from NASA]

The #Artemis II astronauts said they needed more superlatives to describe their view of the eclipse, when the Sun was behind the Moon and its near surface was faintly illuminated by Earthshine

‘Succulent Chinese meal’ speech added to Australia’s National Film and Sound Archive Jack Karlson’s rallying cry of ‘democracy manifest’ added to national collection of sound recordings that hold historical, cultural and aesthetic significance * Get our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcast Thirty-five years ago, when Jack Karlson was hauled into a police car outside a Chinese restaurant in Queensland, he couldn’t have known his bombastic speech would be watched by millions around the world, become a meme and now, be preserved for ever in Australia’s National Film and Sound Archive. Karlson’s declaration – “Gentlemen, this is democracy manifest! … What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal?” – is one of nine pieces of audio that have been added to the NFSA’s Sounds of Australia collection this year, along with a pedestrian crossing signal and Missy Higgins’ 2004 hit Scar. Thread: I want to go over these two shots again, indulge me in a bit of pixel peeping. I think this is an illustrative example because it sets the question of faces aside; from a purely technical lighting fidelity standpoint, DLSS 5 makes this scene worse.

Surprise! I didn't bother making a separate asset for just the head. The rest of the wolf's body is actually squished up real good like an accordion and hidden inside the fireplace wall.

Panel 1:
A crowd is watching TV in a bar. The TV is facing away from the reader. The crowd ecstatically screams “YEAHHHH!”

Panel 2:
A new guy walks into shot from the left and says “You guys watching football?”
A guy in crowd answers “Nope”

Panel 3:
The new guy looks at the TV screen and immediately screams “OH FUCK YEAH”

A dramatically lit low-poly subway level that you would never suspect was built from a single extremely clever texture sheet

Reminiscing now about my first job as a game developer, when lighting was so expensive we couldn't even pre-bake it.

We made a single texture sheet with a lit side on top, a shadow side on the bottom, and a gradient in between, and placed all our shadows by hand with geometry cuts and UV mapping

Photographed most of the birds that are visiting the bird feeder, but the last ones left are a pair (I think) of Nuthatches. They don't hang around for long; these are the best I've got so far, but that first one isn't quite in focus.
