It’s a special day today. I’m appearing on B.C. Johnson’s blog, talking about my creative writing life.
Thanks so much, Bobby! 🥰
Happy New Year. everyone!
My January blog post is now available.

I live for a day like this. Congrats, @crobertcargill.bsky.social , you’ve made it !
By far my favourite picture of Marlowe, taken a good few years ago now.
Wishing a very happy festive period to you all.

Word of the day, though I’m sure no one will need it, is ‘eye servant’ (16th century): an individual who only pays attention or works hard when the boss is looking.
My first draft is littered with brackets. Best thing I ever did for the story! Now I get to edit those bits in for the next draft.
Ooh… let’s start with Oscar Wilde. King of quotations and killer one-liners. He’d be a scream!
Good morning from the south of France! Took this from my office window earlier. Spain is on fire, it would appear… 🤔😆
Thanks so much, Lorna!
Oh, I do love a milestone! Congratulations, and keep at it… 👏👏👏
Agreed! I never understand why some people want to pigeonhole those who make a living, and those who aren’t interested in the money. It’s absolutely no indication of quality, for a start!
I’d be interested in that if I still lived in the UK. Thanks for posting!
You’re most welcome, Lizzie!
Here’s to finishing our respective writing years off in style 🥂

Striking cover, I like it!
I guess my cover counts too, right…?! (Cheeky of me, I know! 😉)
No worries. Have a great day! 👋
It’s my full time job, yes. I work mostly with commercial publishers, but I do occasionally work with authors directly.

You’re most welcome! Best wishes with the writing. And, you know, if you’d like an editor at some point down the line… I’m here 😉
I would perhaps ask relatives who also remembered them, just in case they have any objections, but otherwise… absolutely, go for it!
Ooooooh… 👀
Looking to get me some #bookreviewers!
I’m partway through a series of #nonfiction titles about the #writing craft, and my next book will be #published in February 2025, on the topic of Creating Compelling Characters. Please don’t ask for money. It’s against Amazon rules. Reply here if interested!
This might be the best idea for a film I’ve seen in some considerable time.
Who’d watch this???
Congratulations!
I use a mix of olive oil and butter, but only so the butter doesn’t burn. It tastes miles better than olive oil on its own!
Agreed! 😂
My newly-finished first draft smells like jasmine mixed with horse sweat, shot through with fear. I’m going to call it Betrayal.
OMG, thanks for the heads up, just turned mine off too! 🤨🙄
A methodical approach to self editing your own novel. Includes a handy checklist and other great resources for grammar and punctuation.
There’s a theme there, I’m sure. Just can’t quite put my finger on it… 🤔🤨
