Brazil's Women Rise, Britain's Oil Moratorium & Myanmar's Silent Strike A Note From Rivera Sun Too often in our world, we feel unheard, ignored, and unseen. Unjust suffering is allowed to continue by people who have the formal power to stop it. Common sense solutions are rejected in favor of destructive systems that profit the few. The cries for change, the demands for justice are not taken seriously by society or even considered by decision-makers. Nonviolent action is about making these voices loud and clear. With protests, boycotts, strikes, civil disobedience and much more, we make our demands impossible to ignore. Nonviolent action brings solitary voices together into swelling chants until the rallying cry for change rattles the very halls of power. This happens both metaphorically and literally ... as it just did in Brazil. In early November, thousands of women in Brazil marched against violence toward women. A series of hate crimes, assaults, and gender-based attacks had galvanized people into the streets with a campaign called Levante Mulheres Vives (Rise Women Alive). Six weeks later, the Brazilian government has now taken action by strengthening protective measures for victims. Feminists want them to do more, especially by funding prevention programs, but the government's action shows that the movement has made the demand for change heard.
