Harriet Walter is/was the niece of Christopher Lee! So, hopefully we're also getting a piece of Christopher Lee's family history.

Actually, no. Trump's paternal grandparents wanted to return to Germany at one stage. But they ran into problems b/c his grandfather, Friedrich had originally moved to the USA aged 16. The German authorities accused him of dodging military service, stripped him of his citizenship, and deported him.

'Schinken' means 'ham' in German. I'm not familiar with 'Gipfeli' (it must be specific Swiss word) but it might derive from 'Gipfel' which means 'mountain peak'.

'Ham mountain peak' is kind of funny and appropriate. 😊

He isn't the only one, though. Lee Anderson is in favour of the death penalty. Priti Patel was too at one time.

As for the media, they probably consider Lowe an irrelevance. The only person they're interested in is Farage, though God knows why.

..form a government. The best he could hope for is to split the Reform vote.
Which might not be a bad thing, actually. 2/2

I don't take Lowe too seriously as a politician. He only got elected as part of the cast of 'The Nigel Farage Show' - and if he was now to stand for election on his own, he'd go the same way as UKIP did after Farage's departure.
He'd never get enough members of his newly-formed party elected to../1

I wasn't necessarily referring to the signatories by "many". (Actually - it turns out the number was a lot less than 20k.) I meant in general. But as I say, the gov't cannot reintroduce it due to various international treaties/agreements the UK is a party to. This was the official response.

Many people are in favour of a return of the death penalty. There was even a petition on the gov website supporting its return, which was signed - IIRC - by over 20,000 people. But the gov't stated that it has no plans to bring it back & can't anyway because of international agreements the UK has.

Have had a wonderful few days away. Did a fabulous tour of #Gallipoli yesterday, where the weather was mild - but very windy.

Here's a short video (hopefully you can hear my voice) showing what the Anzacs were confronted with upon landing on the peninsula. #FWW #WW1 #ANZAC

I am such a #FirstWorldWar geek.

I visited the Western Front twice in 2024 - doing tours around Arras (the Somme) and Ypres.

Last year, I went to Sarajevo to see the site of the assassination.

And now I've just booked a trip to Turkey, where I intend to visit Gallipoli and Istanbul!! ✈️

Has it really been 10 years? I remember that day well, and being shocked at the news.

In retrospect, though, it largely explained his disappearance from public life in the last decade of his life. I suspect he was in poor health for much of it. Very sad. RIP, David.

I think oldest age anyone has lived to is 122. I worked out once that if I beat that record, I'll see the turn of the next century.

Actually, Spike Milligan was told he wasn't British when he tried to renew his passport in 1960. He had the option to apply for citizenship, & even the current monarch Charles III urged him to do it.

Spike refused as he didn't want to take the Oath of Allegiance. He became an Irish citizen instead.

I like gravy on roast potatoes...but somehow, gravy on chips is a bit weird.

There isn't a lot of love lost between de Gaulle and the Anglosphere. But I have to say, he is the one historic figure I have come across who did not reject his disabled child or hide her away in an institution. An absolutely outstanding father.

..parish records, which tend to be patchy, are not always available online and generally peter out...unless you find a link to a Royal or aristocratic ancestor whose lineage has been better documented.
Hope that helps a little.
Best wishes.
