Aw, that would be SO COOL.
Important reality to think about, especially on this platform:
100%. Same goes for the judgement I get for driving a used Nissan Leaf. Not only did I want an EV, but it was literally one of the cheapest options last summer when my Prius died.
Entire downtown buildings in foreclosure, restaurants closing left and right, new projects stalled for years, but at least butter is doing well.
Spoiler alert: nothing trickled down.
This is a great example of leadership. Ramsey County is wrong about the benefits of the CP Ford Spur. Rebecca Noecker will fight to acquire this public space for people walking and biking in West 7th, and it'll pay off in spades.
Word.
Non-existent, okay dude. Just for one example, she’s probably been at the legislature building support and funding for St. Paul more times in the last 100 days than Melvin Carter did in 8 years.
I love knowing this, while also knowing that I’m probably going to spend 4-6 hours/month of my free time for the next 6 years battling MnDOT to include basic items like street trees, pedestrian infrastructure, and bike lanes in their West 7th project. Cool, cool, cool.
We don’t know any of the backstory here. Her kept the city functioning during a full-scale federal occupation in the first 100 days on the job. Plenty to impress me.
Overall I am extremely pleased with Mayor Her’s leadership so far.
I’ve definitely butted heads with Sean on a few things, but overall enjoy working with him. And he’s a St. Paul guy. The new lady lives in…Shakopee? We’re going to entrust the care of our streets to someone living in the exurbs? I don’t like it.
Good point. I was thinking more about St. Thomas U and their new buildings. Glad to hear the Wild chip in.
Ah, I was picking up on that already only 40 pages in. Yeah that book makes it sound more like market forces and car preference killed streetcars when I always thought it was a literal conspiracy. Thank you for this link!
Sounds about right. I’m kind surprised you got a response at all from Perez-Vega.
Yiiikes. But very, very good to know. Thank you for asking this!
Yeah for sure. This is just like reason #137 why I support Rebecca. And she will absolutely work to make it happen. The fact that Maria publicly said this is a huge red flag that she has no idea how much the W7th community has been jerked around since 1998 regarding transit/street/trail improvements
Totally agree. Are you a delegate? I am feeling optimistic for Rebecca but I think it’s going to be close.
Also…it’s insane to be that you would publicly state you *don’t* support a long-promised multi-use trail!?!? Just make an empty campaign promise like everybody else, FFS.
Any entity that’s building new sportz megaplexes or paying top administrators >$200K can and should be paying into a PILOT program to help keep this city running. St. Paul’s non-profit industrial complex needs to be reigned in.
Same.
I just heard about that, too. Meanwhile we’ve been negotiating with the city and Keystone for literal months to expand hours at the west 7th branch to make it line with every other branch in SPPL, but to be open it requires two Keystone staff and two library staff.
Oof. Tough week for Melvin Carter! Bummer to see so much money and staff time wasted on a project that went nowhere. I’m so glad we have a new mayor focused on core city functions and economic development.
An absolute must watch, people! I was there in person and much of the analysis presented felt like a gut punch. The current state of the city is very sobering. But we have to understand the problem to start fixing it, I guess.
It’s the fact that Carter’s chosen few appear to be the only public sector employees who receive such bonuses is more the issue. Previous mayors did not do this. City council does not do this. As Carter said, “budgets are where values meet reality.” Guess we know his values now.
I am aware, I read the full article. I guess the joke’s on me because I always assumed political appointees trade long-term stability/certainty for the handsome salaries and rank. That appointees get severance is absolutely wild to me. The fact that Tincher gets a single additional penny = 🤯
Completely agree.
Are you personal friends with Melvin or something? Because your excuses are astonishing here.
The nugget about these staff working one day in January then “earning” their 6 days of “personal time” was especially mind-blowing. Mayor Her has every right to be livid.
These were handsomely compensated appointees. They were far from underpaid. I’m a public sector employee and my entire annual salary is less than Jamie Tincher’s payout.
My mistake, they worked one day in January and then “earned” a payout for the full six days of “personal time.”The first would have been another paid holiday.
