If you have experienced direct harm to your work/lab/job due to recent changes at US NSF, & are willing to share this on behalf of the Am. Society of Naturalists and NSF, please DM/ email me ASAP (this is time-sensitive) or submit story here sites.google.com/view/scienti...
Please share widely
Highlights of really cool new research coming out of ESA journals, would highly recommend checking all of these out-- especially the one about seed sourcing for restoration :)

Predicted distribution of (a) edible and (b) medicinal plant species richness based on harvest year range random forest models. The study area was restricted to a 150-km buffer from sampling and clipped to the same vegetation type (central mixedwoods). Areas in gray are masked from prediction

We want to send a message to the world: what has happened today is an absolute disgrace. It is completely un-American.
A generation erased,
dreams gutted,
minds that mapped oceans,
tracked fish fleeing
warming tides.
They knew the sea’s voice,
spoke reef’s tongue,
now silenced.
Who hears the currents now?
Who watches the fish?
We bury tomorrow’s voices,
feeding today’s greed.
Bottom line: The intentional loss of exceptional scientists and other terrific public servants at NOAA leaves our country less safe and more vulnerable.
I'm interested in talking to any NOAA Fisheries employees who lost their jobs today, especially those in the PNW, at the Northwest Fisheries Science Center, or those who work on Columbia River salmon. DM me or hit me up on signal ericbarker.67
USAID staff have two days to clean out their offices at the agency’s former headquarters in DC.
People are gathering on the sidewalk in the rain to show their support, applauding workers as they pass by.
Gregg is a former Marine and Forest Service ranger. He's saved the lives of hikers dangling off a cliff or going through cardiac arrest, and he's bravely fought forest fires to save small rural towns.
100% of his salary is paid by WA state.
Elon fired him. Share his story.
Know folks who DOGE fired? The Congressional Dems has a survey for you. Might help them put a stop to this dangerous nonsens. #geoscience #oceanography #Climate #standupforscience @davidpepperoh.bsky.social #NSF #CDC #HHS @altnps.bsky.social

Big, growing crowd just west of the U.S. Capitol protesting Trump, Musk and DOGE on President’s Day. “Hey Congress, grow a spine,” they shout, gathering for a rally around the reflecting pool.

Extremely disappointed to see HHMI decide to kill their Inclusive Excellence program, including terminating the current IE3 awards to over a hundred institutions effective this year in the middle of a 6-year grant. I was hoping HHMI (and other private funders) would continue to lead the way.
Scenes like this wouldn’t be possible without whistleblowers coming forward about Elon Musk’s authoritarian takeover. Reminder that if you’re a public servant wishing to report fraud, waste, or abuse at a federal agency, you can do so on my website:

Just got a story approved to run on Monday on the crisis happening at the NSF.
If you are an NSF-funded scientist and have been personally impacted by the funding pause this week, I'd love to hear from you.

I'm not breathing a sigh of relief. This chaos and confusion is standard operating procedure under a Trump presidency. Until we learn more, it certainly reads like Trump is plowing ahead with his plans that will crash the economy and make communities suffer.
My lines are open, folks. Keep the messages coming because what I'm hearing so far is horrifying and I'd like to shine a light on this. 🙏🏼

If you're a scientist that serves on an NSF panel that got cancelled today, I'd love to talk to you about it for an NPR story. DM, email or reach out on signal.
#academiasky #womeninSTEM #teaching/learning Does anyone know if there is a full listing some place of the #NSF programs that have been terminated? Also, any word on what will happen to funded projects from those programs?
