Yeah, making use of colours and fur patterns is probably the best way to do it. Hmmm, my rottie has kind of a smooth dome, maybe I should darken some fur to give him a hairline!

Hairlines like that must be tougher to do on a character that's covered in fur, although I have seen balding dad type tigers who were missing the stripes on top of their head and I thought that was really clever. Baldness is correlated with high testosterone, so I'd love to see more of this!
