Today’s over-tired thought:
The number of people who know what dilemma means far outnumbers those who know what lemma means.

Can’t tell if it’s me that doesn’t understand how UK student loans work, or it’s the people quoted in this story? www.theguardian.com/money/2026/a...
Want a fascinating, grim, terrifying read for your Easter break?
It’s not the latest Times bestseller, it’s the state of UK HE institution finances. I don’t have the expertise to critically assess it, but it’s a worrying snapshot.

👏👏👏😉
I thought you said it was something new? 😉
My main gripe with the alphafold example is how it shows you need decades and decades of high quality data, well structured, open and accessible to train a model -- and yet they always gloss over it and pretend it's just AI and magic. No, we need to continuously invest in real data and FAIR data.
How to make your own robot!
A review of people making awesome lab robots out of commercial 3D printers. Thank you @vsaggiomo.bsky.social and Sander for inviting me to help write this paper in @digital-discovery.rsc.org.

Liking this because, well, I have to…
Bizarrely, LinkedIn seems to have become the home of computational chemistry news / paper self-publicity
Avogadro 2.0 drops April 1st — and no, that's not a joke! 🧪⚗️
Now's the perfect time to help improve translations before release. Every language matters for chemistry worldwide.

It’s going to get worse before it gets better
We have a fully funded PhD position (UK students only) at @uobchemistry.bsky.social to work on #multiscale #modelling and #ML of organic #materials! Details www.grynova-ccc.org/jobs.html #chemsky #PhDjobs #chemPhD Please spread the word!
Very cool!
Has @avogadro.cc helped your research? Teaching?
As we prepare Avogadro 2.0 for release this spring, I'm hoping to feature some stories (and citations).

Really looking forward to it. Getting up for a 7 am train was a bit grim though
Despite having been a member for about 25 years, today marks my first visit to @rsc.org

Attended a conversation / talk by Clive Humby. Fascinating insights into the stories and insights that can arise from data
To me “the calculation took 7 hours of compute time” sounds slightly better than “the calculation took 7 hours of computing time”.
Perhaps I’m just indoctrinated 🤷♂️
It’s been a term within High-Performance Computing for a very long time.

Know anyone who would be interested in a PhD using experiments and machine learning to help address anti-microbial resistance? They might like to take a look at this studentship available in Sheffield (I'm helping to supervise the ML part). www.findaphd.com/phds/project...
