Today’s over-tired thought:

The number of people who know what dilemma means far outnumbers those who know what lemma means.

UK government caps student loan interest rates at 6% from September Minister says change for plan 2 and 3 loans in England and Wales will ‘protect borrowers’ from impact of global conflict

Can’t tell if it’s me that doesn’t understand how UK student loans work, or it’s the people quoted in this story? www.theguardian.com/money/2026/a...

The 2026 Reckoning The 2026 Reckoning is an open report on the financial sustainability of UK higher education in the mid-2020s. It synthesises published evidence from university annual reports and financial statements,...

Want a fascinating, grim, terrifying read for your Easter break?

It’s not the latest Times bestseller, it’s the state of UK HE institution finances. I don’t have the expertise to critically assess it, but it’s a worrying snapshot.

My main gripe with the alphafold example is how it shows you need decades and decades of high quality data, well structured, open and accessible to train a model -- and yet they always gloss over it and pretend it's just AI and magic. No, we need to continuously invest in real data and FAIR data.

Making sure you're not a bot!

Avogadro 2.0 drops April 1st — and no, that's not a joke! 🧪⚗️

Now's the perfect time to help improve translations before release. Every language matters for chemistry worldwide.

To me “the calculation took 7 hours of compute time” sounds slightly better than “the calculation took 7 hours of computing time”.

Perhaps I’m just indoctrinated 🤷‍♂️
