Elmet review – the brutal tragedy of a feral family living on the edge of society Adaptation of Fiona Mozley’s novel wisely leaves the looming figure of Daddy unseen in this quasi-mythical tale of an off-grid family’s doomed fight against class and capitalism

'...a rich retelling of a haunting book' ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ @fjmozley.bsky.social @johnmurrays.bsky.social

‘Epic with a capital E’: inside Elmet, a tale of violence and greed on haunted Yorkshire heath Elmet, a novel that was shortlisted for the Booker, is a lyrical, richly written tale of a woodland family on a collision course with an avaricious landowner. Can it work on stage in Bradford?

ELMET (the play!) will be opening in Bradford tomorrow. Catherine Love has written about the process of bringing it to the stage.

I have just got back from the pub where I and a (BBC-affiliated) friend were having this exact conversation. Please don’t let it be a comedian.

‘Literature has completely changed my life’: footballer Héctor Bellerín’s reading list Former Arsenal player wins admiration for his taste in books, but admits one novel defeated him

Always been a big fan of Héctor’s. Sure, he couldn’t cross a ball, but he brought so much style.

Idea for a book about a successful nature writer who gets exposed as a fraud but recovers from the trauma by going back to nature again and then writes a book about the experience which turns out to be an even bigger success than the one that got them into trouble in the first place but then

York City have unveiled next season’s shirt, featuring a rune version of the club name, in collaboration with the Jorvik Viking Centre. Unfortunately you don’t want to mess with York’s fanbase when it comes to runes.

Do it! Cambridge is actually very good for pubs. Not as good as York, but very good.

Elmet’s been turned into a play by total genius Javaad Alipoor. Known for theatre about Iran & its diaspora, with Elmet he’ll be exploring his Yorkshire roots. 22nd October - 2nd November in Bradford, with live music from Mercury Prize-nominated The Unthanks.
