With this trial and the recent meta analysis, is there any justification (apart from research) to scan for or treat a duct in the first 2 weeks after delivery? (Exclusion criteria of this trial acknowledged - but they were pretty narrow IMHO). Asking for a friend.

🧵2: Open Access? More Like Open Wallet.
OA was supposed to democratize science.
Instead, universities now pay up to $10K per article in APCs—feeding publishers with profit margins over 35%.
The result? Pay-to-play research and rising global inequality in who gets to publish.
Does anyone know of a good ultrasound guided vascular access simulator for newborns? We have a paediatric phantom which is good but the veins are a bit too large and deep.

Very interesting, Afif. Do you have any thoughts about pretreatment base excess and PDA closure? Confounded by PDA severity or preventing constriction of duct?
Can't see the full text. Seems like a sensible idea. Did they talk about time to full oral feeds? Could two weeks more of CPAP delay feeding progression?
Lungs need pressure to grow!
RCT demonstrates extended CPAP promotes lung growth and gas exchange

Reseated all the Vocera batteries so that they're actually charging. I'm basically a living saint.
Haven't seen preterm babies w/ compensatory hypocarbia. Lots of metabolic acidosis w normal lactate + CO2. Interesting topic: clinical assessments often not sophisticated IMO -> unnecessary treatment. Agree re: monitoring for dehydration but hard to weigh accurately early. Does your unit use NIRS?
Very interesting, makes sense but numbers in the formula group are quite small in fairness. Thanks.
If BM = probiotics, does that mean that breastmilk is needed for maximal effect of probiotics? Original proprems trial had high rates of breastmilk usage. Or does sheer number probiotics CFUs overcome lack of HMOs? 🤔
Uh, Olivia. Can you write me a short poem about Star Trek DS9 season 6, ep. 22 please? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
Exposure to outdoor air pollution in the month before birth dramatically increases the odds of newborns being admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICU) in the U.S., new research suggests.

Okay, so preterm formula increases risk of NEC but how does that interact with probiotics? Does anyone know what the rate of probiotics use in this study was? Can't see it in the article pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38497706/
Or nHFOV?
Should we extubate to high NCPAP or NIPPV though?
Help, maybe I'm dumb but how does a PDA cause metabolic acidosis without a rise in lactate?
