It’s so bleak!
A companion column to @evawasney.bsky.social’s excellent AI news piece: journalism is for people. It should be done by people. Humans can’t keep doing “more with less.” Instead of turning to AI, might be time to do less with way more. www.winnipegfreepress.com/arts-and-lif...
Tech snark at its finest!
Upfeat’s response to this story is wild. They deleted the library renovation “coverage” mentioned here. The librarian I spoke to was deeply disturbed to have a quote attributed to her that she never said.
But sure, making stuff up about real people and places is a net good…
It’s brutal.
Interestingly, this glowing story about Boring News fails to mention the fact that the Winnipeg Sun was publishing the aforementioned AI-generated news slop on its own site earlier this year 🧐

Matthew Tate, CEO of the Winnipeg tech company behind the site, is well aware of the issues with his news products. He decided to launch anyways.
Boring News is marketed as a solution to declining local news in Canada. In reality, the website is AI news slop filled with errors, made up quotes and fake photos.
My story for the @winnipegfreepress.com:

It's almost the weekend, which means it's time to read this can't-look-away, bonkers story about a Winnipeg business, known for coupon aggregation, that has churned out tens of thousands of AI-generated stories in recent months.

I know it's only April, but I am pretty sure this @evawasney.bsky.social piece will top my Favourite Freep Stories of the Year list. #heatedrivalry @hrnews.bsky.social @winnipegfreepress.com www.winnipegfreepress.com/arts-and-lif...
Finding every excuse to continue writing about Heated Rivalry for Winnipeg's paper of record.

Del Barber has hung up his guitar and gone all in on pizza.
The singer-songwriter is now the proud owner-operator of a wood-fired pizza shop in the tiny town of Inglis. My @winnipegfreepress.com story below 👇🍕

It’s official, Winnipeg has been selected to host the 2027 Juno Awards.
“No one cares. Oh, really? Then why is there — and this is real — a full, multi-chapter work of Heated Rivalry fanfic set at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet during Nutcracker season, written by someone who isn’t even from here?“ my column from Saturday: www.winnipegfreepress.com/arts-and-lif...
A banger lineup this year.
Just when you think things are bad, a story like this comes along. Great work, @evawasney.bsky.social !
Turns out, the kids are alright!
Is your gym full of ghosts?

I wrote about our girl, Catherine O’Hara and her singular brilliance. Also a reader said this article was the best part of his weekend and he likes sports, so. www.winnipegfreepress.com/arts-and-lif...
Thanks, Brittany! I could talk about it forever and ever and ever and will likely watch it a dozen more times 😂
My absolute pleasure! I love how this fictional story has inspired some very real personal reflection, myself included.

I'd say the FP is doing pretty well considering our arts & life team has approx seven writers, one of which is part-time (me). Really upsetting to read this when we bust our guts to find and write the stories we do. Merry Christmas.
I mean we have one of the few remaining books sections in the country, featuring local reviewers and books. I reported on local writing all year, both in my section and in arts and life, including a roundup on 10 notable local books from 2025 (which could have easily been 20) running Monday. 🤷
