She pats his head and hands him another bag of props. They're on cleanup duty tonight and she wants Smile to be able to pull his own weight.

" Good! Put this in the pile and I'll be over with the rest of it! "

Without checking if he can even handle the single bag she runs off to grab three more.

Eyes widen as the boy rests on her. Guess he is finally feeling comfortable with her.

" Well we've just got a bit left ta do... then we can go back ta the tent. Think you'll make it? "

Its wild to me that 10 years ago I was wishing the circus crew survived, like didnt find out who Smile was or who killed Baron. But now I'm just wishing theyd stay dead.

ik hardly any character in black butler gets a happy ending, but Doll's feels especially bad. I stopped reading after Snake died, but if/when Doll comes back around ik it will only get worse for them. 2015 me woulda never imagined Doll being killed was the better ending for them.

I ignore Yana making Doll assault Ciel cuz Yanas always doing weird shit like that with Black Butler characters yet no one else had to lose their whole family, die, and be resurrection just to accidentally kill their own brother and have to mourn in literal pain. Like let the kid be dead 😭.

Narrative wise it makes sense, but also Doll doesn't deserve the suffering. In the anime Doll assisted in the kidnapping despite not wanting to but that isn't in the manga. Their crime was caring for Ciel in their own weird ways and now theyre forced to suffer alone.

So now Doll is forced to continue suffering on top of mourning that it was their own hand that killed their final family member. Snake never stopped searching for his family, but had been able to find peace. Doll will never be able to. They were brought back just to suffer.

So when Snake shows up they tell him what had happened and urge him to help them only for him to forgive the killers to the point of sacrificing himself to save Finnian.

Doll died feeling that they had lead their entire family to death beside Snake. And when Doll is resurrected they direct all that guilt at the people who did the killing.

I can't sleep so I'll ramble sbout manga spoilers that broke my heart

All that being said I dont believe Yana intentionally set out to create a transmasc character. Seeing how she treated Grell for the longest time I doubt things were any different come 2008. I don't think that makes Doll less valid than Grell though. They both openly expressed gender disphoria.

I think Dagger and Jumbo are more willing to allow Doll to be childish and grow at their own pace than the others, but even they are at a loss for how to raise Doll so they allow the more assertive members to sway their opinions.

However they also dont want Doll to be coddled forever. They want for Doll to be able to grow into a confident, independent adult and to pull their own weight with their duties to Baron. Yet their family is made up of kids who were forced to grow up young so they battle that while raising Doll.

Doll's family is well intentioned when they push feminine things on Doll. They see Doll as niave and want to prevent them facing more hardship from society than they already have to as a disfigured "girl". They support Doll living as Freckles to let them live w/o the same pressures they face.

Doll died very young and before they could really discover themselves. I think they felt pressure from some of their family to put off self discovery in favor of working. Even if it wasnt intentional on the families part.

Given Doll dies so soon after expressing they are "a girl", during roleplay I will refer to Doll as she/her. But I will always believe if given the chance to come into their own they would chose to drop the female act. They'd either be ambiguous 24/7 or lean into being a man.

They initially dislike having a girly name, they dress masculine and spend a lot of time with their male friends, they are visibly sad in their girly costume, but when told they look like a guy they overreact and try to prove theyre a woman.

As a nonbinary person I truly believe Doll has gender issues going on. I believe they are maybe struggling with being trans-masc without the words to explain it. But they are at a point of trying to convince people they are a girl so that is how i refer to them in the main verse.
