While I accept Churchill’s line that the best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter, I maintain the best argument against our current system is a five-minute conversation with the average politician (or journalist, or academic, or businessperson…).
This helps me resolve the end of Eichmann In Jerusalem, which I found so unsatisfactory when I first read it, and when I returned to it today. Berkowitz makes Arendt coherent. And her Greek understanding of political communities shines through.

Perhaps. You just can’t allow them to be in charge.
The true answer is sortition. And single terms only.
This is how you know you’ve assimilated.
A cheap car for the Volk. Or maybe e-bike, to update for the 2020s.
Confusion is often a symptom of undersized earlobes.

This has been the legal situation in some Australian states for a couple of years now. And has been an overwhelmingly positive thing.
It would be a trek, because they’d been working in the Belgian Congo chopping off hands for forty years.

Hands down, Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom. There’s so much fun to be had there.

And that’s only come out since. At the time, I assumed they were pretty much responding as we were. But it seems quite different.
That’s pretty much it: there were a few people who very loudly couldn’t handle it, but they were also obviously a small minority.
Whereas the vibe from the US over the past few years is that the people who couldn’t handle it and refused to sacrifice for others were, like, most people.
This one’s for the Australian and especially the Victorians. This wasn’t my experience at all; I thought people were pretty good and very willing to deny themselves to help others, even if it they got frazzled after a long time. But Adelaide had it easy. What’s your take?
Right now it’s “I’m gonna try a canine-human mind meld. It’s an incredibly rare psychic power possessed only by me and three other clerks at this store.”
Nah, I was there.
I don’t know about the club, but that was what I expected in August.
Funniest solution: Bayern win the Champions League and Arsenal sign Harry Kane.
One of the Arseblog writers a couple of weeks ago (it may actually have been Lewis) said that the Gyokeres signing was Arsenal finally biting the bullet after years, accepting that a unicorn striker wouldn’t appear, and going for the guy who looked good enough for now.
While it’s easy (and right) to be cynical about companies ostentatiously doing good things, I maintain that it’s a damn sight better than them ostentatiously doing evil things.
Hopefully America rediscovers its 19th-century heritage, and realises that real scholars go to Bielefeld and Göttingen.
