The study was funded by @AgEInves framed within the SEEDALP project, by the Atlantic Botanic Garden of Xixón and Grant “Laboratorio de Vegetación y Biodiversidad” (Principality of Asturias-Sekuens-EU-FEDER). (5/5)
Our results also showed highly species-specific germination, which suggests that under warmer conditions with reduced snow cover, only some species are likely to be favoured, potentially driving climate-driven shifts in community composition. (4/5)
We only recorded significant differences between habitats in the responses to cold stratification. While species from both habitats responded similarly to the other treatments, lack of water and light hindered germination. (3/5)
We subjected the seeds to five months of cold stratification, recorded their germination and subsequently used the remaining non-germinated seeds to test the effects of water limitation, darkness, and constant temperatures on final germination. (2/5)
Last PhD paper alert!
Just published in Journal of Vegetation Science (doi: 10.1111/jvs.70134), we studied four germination cues across 56 species from Mediterranean and temperate alpine habitats to investigate if germination responses differ in a climatically heterogeneous region. (1/5)
Ecosystem resilience depends on successful regeneration - not just adult plant performance - yet these processes remain largely overlooked in monitoring and risk assessments.

Interesting investigation into a dodgy Elsevier journal -- with the additional nugget that the CEO of Elsevier's parent company made more than €15 million in total compensation last year.

I presented this beautiful poster of seed SEM images of the species living in the study communities of my PhD at the VI Sebot Simposium (Spain). Any ideas on how to analyze these images to adress scientific questions?

Our results revealed a significant trade-off between seed oil content and seed longevity, which may aid in understanding species regeneration in alpine soils and inform precise protocols for ex-situ seed conservation. (4/5)
In the studied species, seed oil content ranged from 1% to 34% and exhibited strong phylogenetic constraints, which likely prevent selective responses of alpine species across altitudinal and microclimatic gradients. (3/5)
Focusing on seed oil content and composition (ratio of Unsaturated and Saturated Fatty Acids), we tested three potential trade-offs between oil content and seed mass, seed longevity and germination timing, revealing a significant trade-off between seed oil and seed longevity. (2/5)
Third PhD paper alert!
Just published in Plant Biology available at onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
We explored the functional trade-offs and ecological correlates of seed oil traits by examining seed oil patterns in 47 alpine species. (1/5)

Probit analysis is key to modelling seed viability loss over time. A new Methods paper in #SeedScienceResearch led by @dustinwolkis.bsky.social provides R code for fitting survival curves and assessing seed longevity under different storage conditions! #Botany #PlantScience 🧪
Una investigación de la Universidad de Oviedo y el IMIB resalta que las semillas de sitios más cálidos y secos se adaptan para germinar en condiciones de sequía. 🌸
