Did you know the GitHub Monaspace project includes nearly three quarters of a million glyphs?

We documented the design process in our brand new case study:

Yes, the order of operations was quite different. Generally you have to start the process by ‘solving’ the glyphs that are most impacted by the fixed width. So you begin with glyphs like the boldest ‘m’ for example, and work your way towards things that fit more naturally within the constraint.

Thanks so much! It was a joy to work on. And wouldn’t have been possible without my talented colleagues at Lettermatic.

Strongly recommend this read; it leads up to a quite powerful showcase of multiple styles of the superfamily in HTML and in code. It makes perfect sense when you see it.

Some of you may know I've been working as a typeface designer at Lettermatic for the last 2.5 years. Here's the case study for Monaspace, our collaboration with @github.com @githubnext.com. I wrote the case study and worked on Cyrillic, Greek, and IPA characters for the 4.1 update.

It's tempting to think that simpler letterforms = more legibility. But in my experience, that's not true. Typefaces are design systems too, and they need a certain level of complexity to work well. Here's why:

You’d think they’d actually embrace this since the least effect ad ever must be the one to the person who just acquired the product?
