sharing this opportunity for reach!
How do various forms of dehumanization shape public support for drone warfare? We address this question by articulating an original typology of dehumanized warfare (forms of dehumanization + types of drones, which informs our survey design). @cornellbtpi.bsky.social

This timeline: www.publicpolicy.cornell.edu/btpi/news/po... sets the stage for a deeper conversation. It maps how the standoff developed, who the key players are, and what’s actually at stake. It also provides a grounded analysis of essentially, the problem of the next decade.

At @cornellbtpi.bsky.social, we sit at the intersection of emerging technology and national security, which means the ongoing standoff between the Pentagon and @anthropic.com lands squarely in our wheelhouse. It involves questions about what AI systems should and shouldn’t do and more.
The exercise examined how allies navigate hybrid drone threats and critical infrastructure disruption in the rapidly changing Arctic. We were particularly honored to welcome President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson of Iceland as our special guest. Thank you to everyone who participated!
@cornellbtpi.bsky.social was proud to host Polar Frontlines, a geostrategic simulation focused on the evolving security dynamics of the Arctic, funded by the Homeland Defense Institute at USAFA.
It was truly great being back at Cornell after almost 3 years!
Thank you to the Brooks School of Public Policy for the warm welcome and the students for their great engagement!
In her talk, she spoke about her research on AI governance, datafication and algorithmic marginalization, and the geopolitical impacts of AI.
We are incredibly grateful to Dr. Okolo for speaking with @jamespattonrogers.bsky.social's class.

Last Friday, we welcomed @chinasa.bsky.social, the Founder of Technecultura, a Policy Specialist at the United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies (ODET), and a recent Computer Science Ph.D. graduate from @cornellupress.bsky.social.
Her presentation highlighted the growing importance of AI in defense decision-making, capability development, and national security strategy. We are very grateful to Dr. McArdle for sharing her insights on the future of AI in warfare and governance.

Last Friday, @cornellbtpi.bsky.social welcomed Dr. Jennifer McArdle, Director of Helsing Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of Europe’s largest VC-backed defense AI company. The talk explored the concept of software-defined warfare and Helsing’s approach to responsibly deploying AI.
He shared perspectives from his work at the U.S. Army War College. The conversation also highlighted his recent co-authored publication with Joseph Amoroso, “Defending America Against Drones: A Whole-of-Government Approach.”

Last week, the @cornellbtpi.bsky.social welcomed Senior Fellow Lieutenant Colonel Paul Lushenko, U.S. Army, as part of our weekly Tech Talk series.
Speaking in a personal capacity, Dr. Lushenko drew on his operational experience and academic research on drones, emerging technologies, and policy.
The piece explains how tariffs function as taxes on imports, how costs are often passed through to consumers, and why price increases can be felt most acutely in household essentials.

@cornellbtpi.bsky.social Non-Resident Senior Fellow Gustavo F. was quoted in a new explainer on President Trump’s newly announced 10% global tariff, issued after the Supreme Court struck down the administration’s prior tariff plan.
Sarah Kreps, Director of the @cornellbtpi.bsky.social, notes that “When you grow so quickly, even if your goal is not to move fast and break things, things are going to break — and then you have to figure out what to do."

Titled “Great Power Competition in the Arctic Ocean,” the exercise explored how the U.S. might respond to mounting strategic challenges in the Arctic using non-military policy tools, fragile alliances, and emerging technologies.
Earlier this semester, @cornellbtpi.bsky.social Senior Fellows Paul Lushenko and Keith Carter helped guide a bipartisan national security threat simulation at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center with congressional staffers.
His ongoing work explores low‑cost sensing solutions that could help drones detect laser targeting in milliseconds and enable swarm‑level evasive behaviors, with implications for both U.S. doctrine and adversary counter‑drone strategies.

On Friday, January 23rd, @cornellbtpi.bsky.social Director’s Fellow John Miller gave a seminar on how drone warfare has evolved over the past decade and what it means for future conflict. He traced the shift from expensive, high‑end systems to cheap, mass‑produced DJI‑scale platforms.
Do large language models democratize public participation in the regulatory process, or exacerbate existing gaps? In a new article in @bigdatasoc.bsky.social, Sarah Kreps and I use two survey experiments to explore the democratic opportunities and risks of LLMs:

Join us on February 26 at for Herb Lin's talk on “When AI Safety Isn’t Enough: Managing Risk at the AI/Nuclear Weapons Nexus.”
Herb Lin is a leading scholar on cyber, AI, and national security with experience from @stanfordpress.bsky.social, the National Research Council, and more.
He traced the shift in cybersecurity from traditional network defense to securing AI and highlighted emerging challenges that will shape the next decade. Students asked questions on public–private collaboration and the future workforce.
